Looking for house in Goa (me too!)

Hi gang,

Looking for a 2-3 BHK house in Goa for the spring and into the rainy summer season; 2-4 months.

Couple of preferences:
  • furnished (modest) with a kitchen
  • near enough to a beach to hear the ocean
  • not too far from food markets (bike's ride)
  • quiet but not too isolated
  • can support broadband internet (additional cost to me).
Budget around 15 lakh, starting after peak season (early to mid Jan).

If you have or know of any place that might match the above description, let me know!

Hi, when I was in Goa last year I rented an apartment on the edge of Calangute which seems to fit what you're looking for. As it happens I've got the card here right next to me as I am currently making a scrapbook of my trip (I realise it was over a year ago but I am lazy)! I'll just copy exactly what it says to make it easier:

--------------
Andrew and Theresa Fernandes
Opposite Empire Beach Resort, Gaura Vaddo, Calangute, Bardez, Goa 403 515
Email: terrypio@sancharnet.in
Phone: 0832 2277566
Mobile: 9822387691
--------------

Two bedrooms (double beds), a minute's walk from the beach, about 5 mins bike to the market in Calangute, down a side road in a quiet residential area, and a large and quite nice dining/living room (although there was a hideous dusty Christian shrine-type thing on a shelf that made me shudder a bit, as well as quite a few dried flower arrangements that I had to pack away in a cupboard as they were too vile to live with!).

Sorry, I don't really get the whole lakh thing but I was paying about £85 per month and I was there during the monsoon (wouldn't do that again though!). Not sure if this is a good price or not but I was quite happy and it seemed worth it; it was nicer than the other apartments I saw. The only thing is I'm not sure about internet; I just used the internet cafe which was about 2 minutes bike ride up the road.

Hope this helps you a bit!

Hi Amber,

Synchronicity! I love it! Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call.

Note to readers: I made a mistake on the price above, I meant to say Rs. 15,000 /mo (not Rs. 150,000 which is 15 lakh!).

Sounds like your flat was well within that amount last year.

How was the view? Also, would love to hear about your monsoon experience in another thread; I've never seen one and was thinking of holding out long enough to experience it!

Thanks again!

One lak is 100 000 rups, you mean 15 000 rups or 0.15 lak don't you?
Or do you want to buy the house?

Hi! There wasn't a view of the beach unfortunately, but there was a little covered balcony that was quite nice to sit out on, especially once I'd strung up a hammock there. The balcony looked down on a yard type thing and there were other houses built around it, but it was very leafy and quiet (oh apart from at around 7 a.m. every morning when this man selling bread would cycle around and around the yard squeezing a horn to announce his presence!). Hope it all works out for you. Oh, and the monsoon ... very very wet is what springs to memory!

Wonderonomic...first of all I'm holiKarang secondly he said 15 lakh, so
1 lakh=100.000; 15 lakh=1.500.000

1 crore is 10.000.000 (1.000.000 is 10 lakh)

but he actually meant 15.000 (wich is 15 hazaar in Hindi)
thus 15.000= 0,15 lakh

I'm not good at money or maths, but I'm fairly good at Hindi...LOL

no, ten lakh is the only term as far as I know...but you can still say 1 million
there is 1 billion (1.000.000.000), which is 1 arab (now I know you will start some joke)

hope we aren't too off topic!!

No joke on that, but I feel it's right on topic since the man uses Indian terms he don't know.

Holika; just a bit... especially given all the posts that follow the 3rd post above where I state:

People: if you write the numbers the way that Indians do it makes it much easier:

1 Lakh --- 1,00,000 (hundred thousand)
1 Crore --- 1,00,00,000 (hundred lakh)

Commas are used, as in UK/USA notation, with a "." for decimal

that's true, but for most people who don't know the Indian number system it won't be easy to understand instantly, we were actually noticing the confusion

I can say 1 lakh 1,00,000= 1 hundred thousand 100.000
when 'translating' it you have to use the Western system...I believe
