Right now, I am looking for a position where I can teach English (as a second language). I don't mind working at a school or as a private tutor. I just want to teach (preferably in Panjim)!
I graduated from the University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA) in June of 08' and haven't found much work since then. Any advice would help. Thanks!! |

Plus you should, of course, have a business/employment visa if money is involved.
It is easier to work without one in some "low-profile" occupations, but as a teacher you will be known to many. If you don't have the visa, someone who does and is already teaching, might just decide to make a phone call.................. |

You may try as voice trainer in Call Centres/BPOs. But yes you'll need work visas.

Hi DW, thought I would get asked that question, but was tired last night..........
GGG, yes, English! It was reported in the UK newspapers some time back that people working at call-centres in India were being taught to speak with a Geordie accent. "Geordie" is the name given to people who live in a certain part of North-East England, centred on a town called Newcastle-on-Tyne. The accent is very distinct and when used locally, also includes many strange words that cannot be understood by other English people. Anyway, the reason for this was that a survey had been carried out in the UK to find out which regional accent inspired trust and a feeling of well-being when used by a telephone operative. The "Geordie" accent won hands down, so some call centres were incorporating it into their speech training in India. |

Thanks for the interesting explanation johnny five. And yes, I would like a paid position. I'm looking into the call centers but I'm having trouble.. |

Unless I am mistaken, even an American citizen will need to return to the USA to get a "work" visa. The question was also asked some weeks back as to how that impacted the existing Tourist visa (ran in parallel/superceded/cancelled etc) but I can't remember the answer? |

Yep. Johnny Five, you're right. There is no way I'm going to be able to change my tourist visa into a work visa. Ahhh!

Employment visas a granted against specific jobs, and they have to be satisfied that a local person could not do that job. Also the visa has to be applied for in the applicant's own country. We are not professionals, but this site has a reputation for good-quality information. Please help us maintain it by finding out the facts before you try and advise. |
