goa

Hi I'm Sally and just found this site.
I am in the process of trying to decide whether to move to Goa with my Goan husband and daughter or to stay in the UK. Any helpful comments are very welcome.
Thanks
Sal

Wonderful way of life, quite westernised in some ways but traditional Goan culture is never far away!

Nice scenery, job possibilities most people speak English. Go for it nothing is set in stone if it's not for you well get a flight home!

I love Goa....Why not go for it see how it goes!

Think about your pros and cons.

Also Goa is a terrific way to ease in to the reality of India and the poverty etc.

I loved it and although I couldn't wait to get there. I still wasn't sure what to expect....now I miss it a lot. I was happy walkig through those markets in Mapusa....bl##dy brilliant in terms of culture!

sallynaik - good luck! my wife sent off her OCI application last week, i'll be putting the PIO applications in the mail for myself and my son this week.

With a little luck we'll be in Goa by October.

Where are you planning to locate?

Me and my daughter already have our PIO cards so that is one thing sorted. My husband is still on an Indian passport with a residency visa, but we are trying to decide whether he should try to get a British passport before going back to Goa. The problem seems that if you leave the UK for more than 2 years they can take your visa off you. Does anyone know anything about this. We will settle in a village called Pilerne which is about 8km from Candolim. We have ahouse which has just about been finished which was going to be used as a holiday home but the permanant idea seems more and more appealing.
Do you have any kids that are going with you? Where will you be moving to?

If your husband applies or a British passport. Unfortunately, he will have to give up his Indian Passport. The Indian Government does not allow Dual Citizenship!

Well the page still works for me! Here's the first paragraph...

The Indian Parliament has recently passed a Bill granting the possibility of dual citizenship to individuals of Indian origin. The Citizenship Bill (Amended) was passed, however, the specific regulations and requirements are still being decided.

The link you provided doesn't...

Well my Indian colleague who has an Indian passport wants to apply but wont until it is in black and white. I have heard it will cover people in Australia, UK, USA etc etc....she doesn't sound so confident about it though for some reason.

I have not heard anything of it being passed though, so that is the first article. So good news!

After attaining British citizenship, your husband can apply for PIO card, which will entitle him to reside in India

Strange! I am clicking on the link. Must be because I have a cached copy. It should work for you eventually. Anyway, as you say - good news.

That is correct. India does not allow dual citizenship, but people of India origin are eligible for a form of pseudo-dual citizenship which is called OCI(Overseas Citizenship of India). The recently passed bill in the India parliament introduced OCI for the first time.

With respect, you need to calm down, sir.

No I am not saying you are confused. I am saying that the link is probably broken - the site is probably down. To spell out what I meant above - the reason the link works for me is probably because I have the page in cache. I have not tried clearing the web cache to find out, because I trust you when you say it's broken.

Now perhaps you could try to trust others, when they try to help you with your volunteering and/or work.
