Getting to know people in and around Calangute or other areas in Goa

HI,

I am originally from Germany. My husband (who is from Delhi) and I just recently moved to Goa, to Calangute to be exact.
We both work in the hospitality industry and spent the last 4 years in the US. He has a good job in Goa now and I am still searching…
In the beginning it is tough to socialize and to make friends as we don’t know anyone. Anyone out there who would like to meet over a cup of coffee or lunch? As they say: A lot happens over a cup of coffee.
Look forward to your replies.

Tina

Hmmmm, that was helpful!

You have posed a difficult question.
Most expats in Goa, foreigners or from Indian cities, either keep very much to themselves or their immediate social circle. There are no places that I know of where such people go to mix and socialise.
This probably means that you are relying on people contacting you via the forum?
I would suggest putting a similar (not identical) post on the main Goa forum at; http://www.indiamike.com/india/goa-f23/as this will be read by more people who are already here.
I did notice a girl from Germany is planning on moving here soon on this forum. Why not try contacting/replying to her and offering her a little support too. Often this is where friendships begin?

We are trying to arrange another Goa meet up in April. You can look at that thread to jump in. I'm American, husband is also from Delhi. We split our time between Delhi and Goa, but I'm in Goa more often than not. I've got a few little independent projects I'm working on (nothing professional, just personal pursuits) that keep me pretty busy. Johnny Five is right. I've noticed that the expats here either keep to one big social circle or (like me) they keep to themselves a little more because they are here for a reason. But all the people I met at the last MeetUp are really nice, fun, smart people who will likely introduce you to more people if you get the opportunity to meet them. Birds is one IndiaMike member in Goa who you might send a message to. She knows the place well and has been very helpful to me when I was getting settled. I don't know many people here, but I'm available to hang out and have coffee and just chit chat sometimes. Once you get the right to send messages, shoot me one and I'll tell you where I hang out.

Hello Tina,

Welcome to IndiaMike and India.

Many people (both foreigners and Indians) meet at Cavalla hotel/restaurant/bar in Baga on Friday nights when there is live-music. You could pop in and see.

We often go to the TravelBar (which is a restaurant not a bar) in Candolim. The owner Angeline is very nice and will introduce you to lots of people if you want.

Let us know a bit more about your interests so it would be easier to recommend places and people.

In any case hope to meet you at the next IM meet.

Birds, thank you for the reply. I will definitely be there at the next IM meet up. Hope I will find the info about where and when so I don't miss it...

About us: We are in our mid 30', easy to get along with and we enjoy good company.

As for myself, I like to travel, read and to meet interesting people from all walks of life and different cultural backgrounds. While working in a hotel in the US, I worked with people from at least 25 different nations. It was interesting, inspiring and I learnt a lot. I worked in IT publishing (websites & graphic design) and hospitality (diploma in Hotel Management). My last job in Germany (which I only worked at for a few months before we moved to Goa) was in an English Learning school as a personal tutor.

That is it for now, I want to save some info so I got something more to share when we meet

Thanks again for all the advice and information.

Talking Hey!

Hey
Nice to meet you here. I'm David, I'm from Goa. I live in a quiet village known as "Saligao". I like meeting new people and making new friends. I'm a student, I'm currently doing my bachelors in tourism and travel management and this is my final year, yay!
Apart from that I organize events and parties at night clubs here. Would be great to have a chat sometime or even possibly meet up over coffee or by the beach

Cheers!
David

Hi Caroline,

Nice to hear from you! There are lots of ways to help with the strays. Of course we are always short of funds but what we need MOST are people who can help to find adoption-homes within the local communities. If you could help with that it would be great! Another thing we are always short of is flea collars for cats. In India we have not been able to find good ones. Look forward hearing from you when you arrive here.

P.S. Keep in mind that you need an N.O.C. to bring your dog into India.

meet up

Hi David;
If I can get myself to India with my little dog, it'll be a big feat. I'll definitely email you when I find a place. Someone recommended Bokiachem Arradi. Would you say it's desirable??
Thanx for tips and thanx for invite!

What is an N.O.C.??
I'll bring some cat flea collars, but you know that you have to get all the fleas OFF the cats first, then they can keep the fleas off. And they don't last forever. What brands are not working?

Hi again,

Have you checked out the animal forum on India Mike? There are lots of threads on how to bring a pet into/out of India, including a thread on N.O.C.:

http://www.indiamike.com/india/dogs-...ls-help-t86181

And also a long thread with general recommendations:

Taking Dogs and cat to India - lets get some new info here - May 2009

With regards to the fleas collars, I think the brand we get here is Bayer but we suspect these may be local manufactured copies as they either do too much or too little.

Never heard about Bokiachem Arradi. In any case may I suggest you first spend a month or so in a hotel before getting something permanent. The Banyansoul (www.thebanyansoul.com) is a nice place if you have the budget. They are a dog friendly hotel. But of course it depends on what your budget is and where do you want to be in Goa.
