generators in Goa

Hi all,

Does anyone have any information regarding domestic generators in Goa, ie recommendations as to make and capacity etc. We will have an inverter fitted but would like a back up to run the kitchen, a few more lights and 1 or 2 ac units. Most importantly we will need one that will cut in automatically when the power fails. I think we will need something called an Auto Mains Failure device to take care of this. Any help, advice or members experiences will be very gratefully received.

There has been a good discussion going on the last couple of days. What I have put about the noise problems is fact, not theory!

Generators or inverter. Johnny thanks very much for your reply re noisy generators. Have been doing some research and find there are available 10kva inverters that are claimed to be able to run 2xac 1xfridge countless fans and lights. Have you any experience of these high capacity inverters or have you heard any reports.

Best regards.

Sorry, not in that league, price-wise!
And also remember that the other limiting factor with an inverter system is batteries.
Reading between the lines, I can see the sort of system you are planning needing a dozen or so at Rs10k each!

We have a great inverter guy called Mr. Gaunakar from Ponda who linked up the whole house and office. Now, even with the power gone for hours, we never seem to be without it and there is no need for a noisy, polluting generator. I am traveling at the moment so I only have his mobile which is: 9422057352.

Hi Birds thank you for your reply and Mr. Gaunakar's phone number. We will contact him and discuss, when you are back from your travels would it be possible to post here the make, capacity and type of inverter/UPS you have. By the way, read the poem on your profile and shiney new hubby and I both were in tears. It is our sincere wish to get involved with animal welfare when we are full time in Goa: any contact details for organisations would be very helpful.

The noise issue hadn't occurred to me before, whenever I have fantasised about immunity from power cuts. Not only the nuisance aspect, but the announcement to all that one has a very stealable machine!

Congratulations on the new hubby!

I really love that poem because it is exactly how it is. Happy to hear you would like to get involved in animal welfare. There is a huge need of extra help in all kind of form. Outside my work I run a tiny rescue operation together with a friend. It is very grass-root. I will send you some more details once I have updated my blog.

In the meantime good luck with the moving!

On Lajpat Nagar market in Delhi there were often power-cuts and the whole area would be enveloped in a smelly, thick cloud accompanied by a deafening noise of tens of generators all screeching away. It put me of generators for ever.

By the way, did you know that generators are one of the biggest weaknesses of (smaller) health/dental institutions. Many fail to give proper instruction/control to the person who is responsible for filling it up with diesel and maintaining it. Consequently it happens very often that generators run out of fuel in the night, cutting short the time cycle of the sterilization machine. In the morning nobody would know other than the generator man, who is officially not going to tell....

I haven't gone through details here, but i guess its about the noise of gensets. There are silent ones available in market also, however have not used them personally.

Lot of apartments, offices use the silent types now, they might be expensive but they serve the purpose.

There are some pretty hefty cabinets around some of them. Usually you see this for the big machines outside offices, but I've seen small ones too.

Silence is relative though; what passes as silent in the day may not be on a still night. There's AC machines in the night, anyway...

Hi again,

I am back in India and checked the inverter. We have two, 1 large one which powers the office but that is just a large box on wheels with six batteries and no brand name. Perhaps Mr. Gaunakar put that thing together himself. I just know that 2 days ago we had no electricity the whole day but with the inverter we were fine.

Than there is a small inverter (about the size of a laptop but thicker) with 1 battery for some things in the house and that is branded SineWave GoldLine.

I am not sure whether this is of any use to you but I hope it helps.

I forgot to mention that his service backup is excellent. We found that the smaller inverter was not giving as much power as we thought and he immediately send somebody to check. It turned out that some ring which connected the inverter to the battery was a little corroded. He replaced it and did not charge anything even though he came all the way from Ponda on the scooter (90 minutes away!).
