Driving in Goa

Just a couple of pointers following our recent visit that may help other members if they are planning to drive in Goa.

1/. When indicating to turn right Shiney New Hubby really lost it when some ******* whizzed past on the right hand side...( wrong side of road). On telling a Goan friend of this he explained that indicating to the right means that it is safe for any following car to overtake....SNH still unsure whether friend winding him up or not but has vowed to follow Indian example and never indicate again.

2/. The flashing of headlights does not mean "after you"!! It in fact means I am coming through and dont get in my way!!

A couple of small differences to the uk driving system but passed on in the hope it may help other members.

If you wish to take a turn, stretch out your hand and wave, that's the Indian way to indicate that you wish to take a turn in the direction of your hand....

people don't bother for turn indicators.......

Second one is correct, flashing of headlights mean, get out of my way, I am in tearing hurry !!!

Thanks GoaMinx, those are two very useful tips, as in the UK those signals have VERY different meanings.

If you see a right indicator in the UK, the last thing you should do is pass, and if someone flashes their lights it means they are letting you through!

Everything in India is different...

Just accept that no one necessarily takes any notice of your signals, whether by indicator or hand. They may overtake, right or left, even as you are turning, let alone when just indicating.

The headlamp thing, though, is very confusing to a British driver. The other guy flashes his lights at you, you flash yours at him...
