Cost of living (again !!??)
Hi all,
I read too many of forums here but I still have some questions. Here they are: How much does it cost to buy a bread? How much does it cost to buy some cheese? (I don't know if I can find any) Can I find some olives in Goa and how much? Can I find some meat in Goa? I mean not fish or chickens I mean red meat. How much does it cost a bottle of beer? How much does it cost a pack of cigarette? If I rent a house in Goa, do you know about avarage electricity and water bill? And a house with a garden for 3 person fully furnished with ac? Thank in advance. |

addendum
halfway decent cigarettes will start around 80 bucks a pack of twenty. Electricity bills can run upto a few thousand rupees if extensive airconditioning used. |

Depends on how many air conditioners are installed. Generally speaking a fully furnished bungalow with 3 air conditioners in a good location will cost you anywhere from Rs 35,000-Rs 90,000. The electricity bill will be approx. Rs 12,000/month

A bungalow for Rs 35,000-90,000 ?!? You kidding me?
Besides that I don't need a good location. Even it's better if I can find a place far far away from city. |

Depends on whether you are coming to Goa to work or just holiday. If it is the former then you will have to live close to the major urban centres in Goa. If you are coming to Goa just to holiday then it does not really matter where you stay. Yes you can save on rent by staying far away from the more popular locations but what you will save on rent you will end up spending on transportation and the absence of any socializing.

Probably I will only need an internet connection which is very expensive and not stable. So I still prefer a cheaper rent with an internet connection. I guess I'll see when I arrive. Thanks for your replies.

Its insane to pay 35-90k as rent + expenses (even though its furnished) if you are coming for living here. Explore and you should be able to get decent unfurnished housing options with 10-15k range irrespective of the place (except for some highprofile places maybe) since you are going for a long term contract & not someone who is staying for a month or two like visitors/tourists. Even 10k would be on a higher side. To furnish your house to a decent level, it might take you around 200-250k - which is like 2-3 months rental. Also, you can do it in steps as and when you need it with some basic furnishing done with 50k.
Check online for housing options: sulekha.com or magicbricks.com abt rentals in goa. PS: Be cautious. You would be easily hoodwinked with the prices/rentals. If possible, have a local (friend/colleague etc) to negotiate the pricings for you. Inquire 10 times around before you commit ![]()

OK I am going to take you up on this one. Show me a bungalow for Rs 10,000/month as the OP wanted with a garden anywhere in Goa on a long lease.

The discussion is about how to live in Goa by renting a house for a living & not a holiday. |

We are coming to Goa to stay for a major part of the year, and are expecting to pay,by all accounts, around 15-20,000 rupees for a furnished 1 bedroom appt with aircon. My question is would theselong term rental (3-6 months)prices generally include the utility bills(electric, water etc)or would this be an extra cost?

15/20000 sounds a lot for a 1 bed. Where is it?
And I agree with an earlier post by GC. Where can you get this bungalow for 10000?

Many thanks for the info GoanCanuck. In reply to goangoangone, the estimate of 15-20,000 was made by some acquaintances who have spent some time in North Goa, I believe around the Calangute/Baga area.Perhaps they were talking about short term rental? We will really only be looking for a 1 bed appt,if possible with aircon, internet hookup and cable tv,short walk or taxi hop to shops, bars , restaurants. We don't need to be in the thick of the tourist belt or near the beach as we live near a beach now and never use it.The best advice seems to be to come and check everything out in situ.If you are saying that 15-20,000 seems to be on the high side I'm all the happier!
