Yeah. If Texas loves their meat, Delhi loves their dairy. Everything has dairy in it, even the meat! I'm sure there are vegan places around, but it is extremely rare. I found a vegan place on the way to Agra from Delhi on the highway, bgut the name slips me.

Oh really? A vegan place on the highway? Very interesting. I wonder what volume of business they be handling.

It was a religious place which gave food out, vegan, but you had to give a donation. This was in 2004, I don't know if it is still there. It's around the Mathura area.

Yes, dairy is kind of a big thing here. Totally agree.
Now, I'm looking more for fancy shops etc. or other options (embassy commissaries) that may sell imported (or local, is that even fathomable?) non-dairy ice cream substitutes. Any helpful leads would be appreciated. |

No religion in India promotes vegan diet. Specially around Mathura(birthplace of krishna)I would expect religious places to be vaishnav.... they have a big role of diary products in dialy worship and diet. |

Well I agree with Nayan...the place you are talking about is the Mother of Dairy
...That place is legendary for Lord Krishna and his love for butter.. |

I think soy products are very hard to come by - if anyone knows i would be interested. I think in Mussoorie there was a soya milk available. I am terribly ignorant - are all dairy products forbidden to vegans?? I know all the icecream available here is pure vegetarian and no animal fat is used. Very good icecream in fact, we are most partial to it, hence the slight 'boom' effect of overweight!!!

"Forbidden" may be the wrong word, but yes a vegan diet excludes all products containing animal flesh and anything extracted from animals. There are ethical, spiritual and health vegans (or any combination of the three).

Shashank... does the company say its Soya milk...?
I dont think they can pass soya milk for real milk as the tastes are quite different. And if the fact comes out then they will face hell ![]() |

Soy Products in Delhi
Oh okay,
I thought I'd bump this thread since there hasn't been any good leads. Anyways for the dairy-challenged and those craving real "Oriental" flavor (not that Chinjabi crap), soy products are available in Delhi, and presumably most metros. Soymilk: Soymilk is available widely in many shops in Delhi, especially in the upscale markets, or in chain supermarkets. Besides imported "Silk" brand soymilk in most of the available flavors (140 Rs a carton) you can buy "Sofit"-- domestically produced brand in various flavors, including the more exotic 'Pista.' (pistachio) (70 bucks ?) Tofu: Also widely available at same places where you'd find soymilk above. Though most places carry the ubiquitous tetra-pack'd "Mori-Nu" brand silken tofu (160 Rs), you can find cheaper varieties of tofu (domestically produced) at INA market. (20 Roops a block?) Go to the sabzi-wallah's in INA and ask for it. They usually carry blocks, not silken more like "Chinese-ishtyle" stuff in water. Can't vouch for the freshness, though they adamantly vouch for it. For those who are little concerned about cleanliness or paranoid, you can buy similar cakes of locally produced, prepackaged firm tofu at Modern Bazaar for like 40 Rs. Other Soy Products: Nutrela ('soya' nuggs) are ubiquitious, they're every frickin' where and a cheap source of protein. I even had it when I stayed in a village in Himachal. Er, no the family wasn't part of a vegan religious cult, why do you ask? Raw soy beans can be bought, I believe, in most places as well, so if you're really hardcore, and going through phytoestrogen withdrawal you can make your own soymilk... Notwithstanding the great DMS/Mother Dairy 'soymilk' conspiracy theory. There's a Japanese Supermarket in Safdarjung Enclave, you can probably find a variety of fancy (and expensive) imported soy products, plus frozen edamame. Now who's holdin' back on the soy ice-cream intel?? |
