If you'd start by saying what you do and where you want to go in India we might be able to give an intelligent answer.

As an aside, whenever someone tells me they 'get' x Euro/year I become suspicious, what interests me is if they earn it . Also, is the 80000 before or after taxes?

Summarized: chances of an Indian company offering you this amount: slim to none, it's a crappy deal for them as they can find cheaper local people.

If you work for a multinational and they want to put you in an expat function then you should make a deal that includes or provides budgets for lodging (in south Delhi between 12K-40K EUR/year for something good) , transport (car + driver about 6K EUR/year for a small one) , a good worldwide expat health package (about 8-10 K for 2), school fees for your kids (send them to the american school in Delhi and it'll cost you 12K EUR/head/year) and a 'hardship' allowance that compensates for a variety of things (less comfort than at home, away from family, a partner that probably will not be able to work etc etc).

I'd also strongly advise you to negotiate a 'net' salary to be paid, after deduction of all taxes, provident fund contributions etc. Have your accountant set this up.

Thank you
i understand your name, cynical but helpful
i earn 80 k€ net, but before personal tax
You indeed are saying that a good and decent expat package to sustain a family, is in the range of 80-100 k€ / year after tax.
you are damned right - what indian would pay if they can hire 10 qualified guys for the same price...
I don't know. i'll see and feed the link.

True, very true. Wages for most highly qualified people here are still low by western standards. Of course the cost of living is also less but if you want European or US standards of comfort/quality then you'll actually pay more than back home.

I know a lot of expats, am one myself. Either they work for governments or international organizations, for a firm that set up shop here or started a joint-venture but that want one of their own people here to do management and oversee stuff (a good idea, btw, especially combined with good local staff) or a multinational like Coke or Pepsi. I have to say that with the economic slump and the uncertain business climate in India (red tape galore, rules that keep changing, corruption....) some are deciding that it's not worth it and pull back or put their projects on hold.

The one thing you need to keep in mind as an expat is that what you get paid should not be judged by local standards. No matter if in India you're super rich with what you earn and everyone thinks the salary obscene or asks you 'that's for a year, right?' Never forget that one day you'll return and the only thing that matters then is your purchasing power back home, not what it represented in your temporary home. That's why I'm dead set against people coming here to work for local wages, UNLESSS they do it just for the experience or will settle here in India.

A final thing you need to keep in mind is that, when it's about living in India, I'd guess about 80% of the expats I know strongly dislike it, in spite of the money they get paid. Don't underestimate how different it is and how hard it is to get used to the local ways (and no, money won't shield you completely). Compared to other countries I've worked this is beyond any doubt the hardest and it's not just the poverty that makes it so. Personally I like it, with the occasional fit of desperation thrown in (but my local friends tell me it's no different with them).

Good luck!

Personally, I think an expat needs to make at least $35-40 US dollars/year (before India taxes of approx 30%) to live somewhat comfortably. I realize you can live off that in the states as well, but Delhi really isn't that cheap if you go out to eat regularly and try to insulate your home life from the intensity of daily Indian life. On that salary, you actually won't save that much money, if any. That amount also includes 2 roundtrip flights per month to somewhere cool.

I don't think I live particularly lavishly, but definitely like to experience a city when I get there. Others will give you different amounts, but that's just my estimated budget. Good luck!

You said you earn 80k euros every year. Thats roughly 4.5 Lacs a month here which is very good income !

I'd say anywhere above 50k euros i India would mean you could lead a HIGH life
