OK, so it shouldn't be so difficult to give this person some salary figures to give to his friend who already has the job! Which we don't for how long, the persons skills, the type of journalism job, where she wants to live, what type of flat, guest house, how much travel & 5 star parties & clubs or hanging out on the beach?

It's the OPs original question. How much should she negotiate for?

I've only worked at salaried positions her in the U.S. I never negotiated. The job was offered and I took it or didn't.

Yes curt, I have always tailored my life to my earnings--very unAmerican, indeed!

Things have been taking weird turns here in this thread. My question was truly based on the details I got. I'm not the source, I'm just the messenger (

What basically I wanted to know is exactly what I quoted (thanks to camelgirl) How much should she negotiate for?

I dont want exact to the zero figures. But if you guys can give me opinions, salaries of acquaintances, or incase if someone had first hand experience of this sorts, it would be great.

Thats all I wanted. We have about 15 posts now in this thread, but not even one has a figure or an approximation. Probably I didnt explain it well!

Thanks anyways for the insight.

Well, we're trying our best.

For a 25 year old journalist (American or not), INR 1Lakh a month seems too much.

If you watch Indian TV news and see the kind of reporters, you know they are not earning anywhere near that amount.
I guess it depends on what type of journalism - and what type of company. Is it an MNC?

My employees with 2-3 years experience, and with Engineering degrees don't make that much. Granted they are not from IIT, but they are pretty darn smart.

Weird question would elicit weird answers .. If anything, people have been trying to show the right perspective with limited input. ...details what details...your American friend has been offered a job of editor, well, there are practically hundreds of editing job options and salary ranging from 5 thousand/month to 1 lakh and more/month.

Technically you're right. From my part, it was like throwing a key in the dark and getting the lock open....

Anyways, I did some first hand research from a couple of friends in the media business, turns out many editors do get paid Rs. 60-70k, which is a positive sign. And their salary truly depends on their profile.

As in the case of my friend, she has work experience in Spain, Libya and Dubai working as a journalist. So I think she can score good.

Any other opinions are open

Ok, anyway, don’t take my response as being too cynical, all in good terms . And about experience, if the editing content is 100% India centric that would also be considered.

How very nice of you to say that. Seriously.

Jokes apart, my friend doesnt mind how much she gets paid, she just doesnt want to have to request her parents for cash, which was always the case in Dubai. I'm trying to convince her to agree to a 50-60k deal, which I think the company will definitely offer her, being American.

maybe you should not quote a figure at all and wait for the HR to come up with a figure. That way your work would be easier and you wouldn't scare them away with a huge figure either.

while i go agree with what 'AwayFromHome' said about engineering grads not earning that much. While there are grads who start with salarys as low as 6-10k (or even none in such times of recession) there are also others who are placed in campus for 1 lack pm salary packages or more. Who know considering that the media industry is expanding at a unreal phase and many global brands publishing houses / publishers are running down to India (organic or unorganic expansions) your friend may get a better salary by just not quoting a figure upfront.

Yes, as in "unusually little" for a fairly long and qualified professional Swedish life. A least, it's the net after tax.
