Yes it would be a good place for mattresses...infact if you are going to go that far then i would suggest you go to "Westside" as well in Lajpat Nagar, its a massive store catering from clothes to House stuff..

Coirform mattresses are quite popular, these have coconut coir and better than other foam mattresses.
Please note that hard mattress is not the usual thing here. It may be the case with some budget hotels. Although many people suffering from ilness like spondylosis are advised to sleep on hard mattresses. So it is not necessary that the one provided would be hard.

Perhaps I saw what people have written about budget hotels.

Oh dear, I think I must be starting to look for things to worry about!

You can always buy a piece of foam to lay on top of it --- although try to get latex, its more comfortable. You'll find shops that do stuff like make cushions and mattresses to order (you do here; I imagine they do there as well!). Not a difficult thing.

They may not be for sensitive western flesh --- although it doesn't help that I don't have much of said flesh to pad out my bones!

Things must be better up there! I have not encountered a mattress here that was softer than granite, except in hotels.

In fact I'd recommend to beware of anything with coir in it!

I was told (I even bought it off a friend in the furniture trade) that my coir mattress would get softer with use. After two years it was unchanged, and I was so glad to change it for latex foam!

Hey, who knows... they might expect Haylo & Hubby to sleap in traditional Indian fashion on the floor

Stop worrying. Once you are in Delhi you will be able to find all the things you need and we are here.
The sure shot way of clearing all your doubts and apprehension is to attend a meet up asap after you land

India is not the end of the earth............. most things can be procured, you just have to search for it, which is half of the fun.

REMEMBER

The British gave India bureaucracy .
India perfected it.
