Moving To New Delhi Desperately Seeking Help
Hello everyone,
my partner and 2 daughters (17 and 14) are moving to New Delhi in 2 months time. I will be on a 3 year international assignment there and my partner will be looking for a job in New Delhi. Need help on the following: 1. Looking for a high rise 3 bedroom full service and fully furnished condominium apartment with maids room / centralized air conditioning system / expat area or south delhi. No idea about cost, probaby safe to say US$3,000 to 3,500 a month inclusive of utilities. 2. Advice regarding jobs. My partner works for an executive placement firm in Manila and is looking for a job in new delhi of similar nature. his expertise is in account management / sales and has experienced from a media company and now in an executive placement firm for call centers and other executive requirements. how is the job scene in new delhi. visa will be arranged by my company. any advise on which head hunter or company he should get in touch with? 3. is there a good university in new delhi for my 17 year old girl? which international school will be best for my 8th grader? 4. for those who have children....do teenagers easily adjust and enjoy new delhi? i have the opyion to live the kids and my partner while on assignment in New Delhi but would prefer that we all go unless there is a good reason for us not to bring the kids or relocate the family. sorry for the questions - need help on this one. Moving to Delhi
Lucinda,
Have just read your post and I'm afraid as a single person settled here cannot help with the children's issues but you may wish to contact your country's embassy here as they should have a listing of schools. Also this may have been raised here before and certainly I get the impression the standard of education is good in India. With regards to your husband's job, I am currently working in the call centre industry and I think he may be able to get some work but not sure of the channels to go down. He should definitely post his CV on Monsterindia.com and Naukri.com as these are major recruitment sites and also get a list of recruitment agencies/companies in Delhi from say, Google. Hopefully someone else here in Delhi may be able to give you more help than me but just thought I would post my bit. Good luck with your move. Best wishes,

Hi Lucinda,
As someone who has lived in Delhi years ago, I can give you a few suggestions, but I don't know how helpful they might be. 1) I don't know much about real estate is in Delhi these days. I know some good expat localities are Vasant Vihar and Chanakyapuri (where all the embassies are). You will easily be able to find something in your budget. I don't know where you can start looking, as my husband and I are planning to move back to Delhi too and we're stuck with the same problem about housing. Good luck with that!! 2)As IndianWorker said, posting your husband's resume on Naukri.com, Monster.com, Hotjobs.com will help. Also, maybe you can look at MNC's that your husband might be interested in and get in touch with them personally (by sending them an email and resume). 3) There are a lot of good colleges in Delhi. Delhi has one university, appropriately called Delhi University! There are a ton of colleges in it, it depends what she wants to major in. There are two main campuses, South and North Campus. What does she want to major in? Maybe then I can list a couple of colleges that are well-regarded in that field. 4) I know there is a British School and an American School in Delhi where a lot of the expat students go. They are very well known and follow the British and American standards respectively. Also, a lot of new schools (eg. G.D. Goenka, Sanskriti, Sri Ram) have come up in the last couple of years that are considered just as good. So I don't think you should worry about your daughters' education in Delhi. I hope this helps somewhat!! Good luck!! |

a. Your budget is definitely on the higher side. Even 1500 USD can get you a good serviced apartment with 24x7 security and the works!
b. Your partner's CV needs to go to headhunters in Delhi, not just monster! You might be well placed to ask your local contact for the same or heck, his current company can use its india contacts too!c. For the public universities, you've missed the admission window. For private ones, I cannot comment due to lack of experience. d. There's several good enough schools too. But same admission window. The real question is of culture shock for the kids. If they take it as an year of adventure, of discovery, of new worlds, new friends and rich experiences, no sweat ![]() |

thank you for the help
Thank you very much for your reply.
my daughter who is entering college wants to take up business or fashion. Her primary and secondary education followed the american system hence a university following the same will be good and cushion some adjustments. Are there universities with considerable good population of foreign nationalities? Thank you so muh for your help. Quote:

particularly at the undergraduate level, there will be very few foreign students at any indian university.
i hope you realise that getting into a "good" indian university, especially for management and even for fashion designing is going to be very very difficult; excellent academic students get turned away due to the sheer numbers who compete for entry. |

The Delhi Commonwealth Women’s Association; · The Women’s International Club; · The French Women’s Association; · The American Women Association (AWA); · Group Francophone; · The United Women’s Association; · GLOW; Some of them are on the web. You'll find thme with a google-search. Hans

I just heard from someone searching for a flat that a nice 3-br, 3-bath flat (with AC, broadband access, etc.) can be had for around $1,000 in Defense Colony, and it is hard to think of many areas more upmarket or convenient.
For secondary schools I have heard that Modern School (several campuses) and the Shriraum (sp?) schools are excellent. Portie |

Umm, you're not too far from the truth. Though i think it'd be about 20% costlier if you add the utility bills and all.
Even the british/american schools are good too, as is DPS RKPuram, or GD Goenka |

Please take my help
Dear Lucinda,
I am able to get you accommodation the type of which you are looking for in Central Delhi. since you are going to be in Delhi for three years, it is better that you get furnishings purchased at the right prices in Delhi. For your husband's job, I am able to get him placed in a call centre in Gurgagon. Some persona re known to me. For your daughter, I can arrange to get her in business in gem jewelry business. You may have a tie up in U.S.A. and goods I can get produced in Delhi itself at economical prices. Let me brief you that I have retired after 45 years of service from BIRLAS, ESCORTS-FORD etc. etc. and I now give social service for foreigners visiting Delhi - of-course free of any obligation. Best wishes, V.K. Sanger Moderator Note: This forum is not an appropriate place for business proposals. The poster may be 100% genuine, but any offer from a stranger should be treated with the usual caution due to internet contacts. Thank you. Last edited by Nick-H : Oct 27th, 2006 at 17:21. |
