wont say its safe all the time you could go alone during day to certain parts but certain areas would be out of bounds all the time and nights all areas are risky

Question...

I am a young, single, American woman in Hong Kong considering moving to Gurgaon for an editing position. I am ashamed to admit I know little about the area, and realize that short of visiting it will be hard to understand. However, the company provides accomodation (all staff are in the same building, I understand) cafeteria meals, and drivers to shuttle you to and from work. This makes me think safety is a priority, which I appreciate. However, my dilemma is this: does anyone live alone in such a sheltered environment in this city? Is it enjoyable? Easy to meet new people? Ultimately, not only is it safe for a young woman to be on her own (I am only 22) but will I regret spending a year or more there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

well you will not regret spending time in gurgaon but it will not be like hongkong or US. I would advise you to be cautious in interacting with people, especially young men (some of them have weirdest notions). spend time to with people before you consider them friends and then go by their advice.
its not like its a crime filled place, Indians are actually nice people but there are weirdos everywhere.

Hi,

I just moved about 5 weeks ago from Atlanta to Gurgaon. I have to say it is quite different. It is basically a suburb being built. Public transportation is atrocious and basically non-existant. Most companies end up providing some sort of cab service to and from work. I've been living here by myself and have felt safe basically at all times, well except the other night I was walking down the road at night on the side of the road and was scared a car might hit me. Sidewalks are optional ion most roads.

Meeting people has required effort and a bit of willingness to assume some risk (as is always the case when meeting people through the internet). Most of the people I kept meeting live in South Delhi, so I've considered relocating there, but the commute would be a pain in the ass. You seem to be working for a large company, there were basically two of us in my office until this week. I've slowly met people in Gurgaon and feeling a bit more comfortable in the area.

However, everyone I've met has been really nice and helpful. There seems to be an unwritten rule among expats to make each other feel welcomed. One american basically described the situation as finding "starter" friends through which you can meet more people.

I'm here for a year. At times I've questioned whether or not it is worth it, as I'm sure you will if you are here. However, I think overall the experience is good. In the few weeks I've learned alot, not just about India but also about myself (and I've lived abroad before, US, Canada, UK and Costa Rica). This place definitely requires patience. And in the end, a year is not really that long.

Hope this helps. Probably a bit more than you were looking, but I guess personal experience of someone having gone through it should help.

Sebastian

I'm a banker living in Gurgaon for past three years...having lived most part of my life in South Delhi was always apprehensive of Gurgaon.

But i can assure you its a good place to live with all modern ammenities available.Since its a Corporate hub you have a fairly good crowd avauilable whereever you go.Most appartments have 24 hrs Electricity and Water which makes life really comfortable.

Most good appartments including mine have a good expat population which makes life quite comfortable for non indians.

If anybody needs any help to find out a place to stay, info on restaurants, shopping areas pls let me know.

There are hundreds of expats living in Gurgaon. There are couple of Gurgaon expats groups & I heard that they they meet regularly in Gurgaon.
You can become a member of those groups and you can get to mignle with expats crowds (if ur choosey). I am sure there are quite a few of the same in Delhi aswell.

Serviced Apartments?

I was curious if anyone can provide a list of serviced apartments in Gurgaon that has a large community of ex-pats.

I've searched the threads, and people have mentioned these exist, but I can't seem to find any names!

I'll be in India (Gurgaon) for 2 months (August-September) on business and def. want to meet plenty of ex-pats to go out and have a good time with!

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Brian
