Moving to Delhi, need some info about schools for my 3 year old Hi gang! Okay, I am a fritzy worried mom. I have friends in India who are tibetan. One of them told me he got treated badly by his teachers in school. Kind of old fashioned, they used a stick to whack him...he got demeaned alot. He wasn't the only one who has told me stories like this. Freaked me out! If any of you are from India and have gone to school, tell me, does this really happen NOW? Are there laws protecting kids? My daughter is only 3. She looks like she could be from India, except she is a little paler. She is a mixed kid, spirted, but also polite. I am concerned for her well being. Expat moms and dads, I want to hear your experiences too. I want to place her in a Montessori school in Delhi part-time days while I work. I am trying to get work in a call center and am also looking for an ethical recruiter. Our time line is October or November for arriving in India. Any hints and pointers? Also, I am packing a trunk of toys and clothes for her and bringing it with us...is there anything else that you moms and dads would suggest that i bring to help her adjust? She will eat nearly anything, including hydrabadi pickles mixed in with rice... what about when they leave their grandma and gramps? Do you let your kids call them often? Can video be sent by the internet? How do you handle that readjustment? I have lived in India before, so has my fiance. We know what is coming. My daughter doesn't! I tell her that we are leaving, show her pictures, make Indian food for us, tell her that sometimes people don't always speak the way we do...she seems excited, saying, " I am going to India now, Mamma" Thanks for your advice. ![]()

Don't worry, kiybubumo, Delhi is a great place to stay with kids (except for the climate and the pollution, of course). People love kids. There are all kinds of good schools including lots of Montesorio schools and preschools. Don't bring clothes, they are cheaper here. Cheers, Yulia

Pre-schools in Delhi Hi! Depending on your budget, you´ll find lot´s of good preschools for your daughter. - The American Embassy School has excellent ECEC3 preschool for 3-yr olds, although costly. You need to register her right away, unless you´re a US resident. - At the American Embassy there is also the Apple School - I think that this one is not as costly as ECEC3. - I also know that in Vasant Vihar there are two Montessorí-preschools that are affordable; Little Senators & Magic Years. Quite a few of our Expat friends have their kids there. Bring all her toys to make her feel athome in India. Cheap clothes can be found here for the warmer days. Do bring a fleece jacket, trousers and a thin jacket for Dec and Jan, when the temperature can drop down to 5 degrees Celsius. Kicki

Thank you Kicki and Yulia, I really appreciate your replies. I have been worrying too much about this move. Yes, good advice, I will bring all of her toys. We are five months away from coming to Delhi, but I am preparing her and her stuff. She and I are going through toys, talking about the move, and gathering photos. Thanks Kicki for the heads up on schools in Delhi. Yes, I am an American resident. I will check out the American Embassy School. Do either of you know if it's better for us to buy a car or take the bus? Taxis are expensive! Thanks again! Tracy

Other schools you may consider are 'Your Kids 'r' Our Kids' in Jorbagh, it has a mix of foreign and Indian kids. very informal method of teaching and I think they follow the US kindergarten curriculam/guidelines. We sent our daughter to this school when we moved to India as it was close to our home and my daughter loved it. Another that comes to my mind is 'The Study' in Golf Links, it one of the oldest kindergarten in Delhi and they too have a mix of foreign and Indian kids. Regarding, a choice between taking a bus or driving by yourself, I think both are bad for a newbie to Delhi. I would recommend hiring a taxi whenever you need to atleast for the initial months in Delhi. During this time, you'll know what would suit you better. Quote:
In today's scenario, both Indian parents and teachers are aware of these and the most they do is when the kid has gone out of hand is to ask the parents to come and meet the teacher(s). I've heard that some school has special councellors to handle these kind of kids. Here I'm talking about the normal Indian private schools in delhi.
