Moving from San Francisco to Delhi on July 15! don't know a soul...

Hey Everybody,

After waaaaaaaay too many round-trippers from SFO to DEL during the last half-year, I'm finally going to settle in India for a few years. I'll be working on a judicial reform project at the Delhi High Court and Delhi District Court, starting July 15, and I'm coming out to Delhi next Wednesday (11 May) for a few days to make some preliminary arrangements. I've found many of your "how to get situated in Delhi" postings incredibly helpful, and just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to help each other out.

Anyway, I don't know a single westerner in Delhi, so I'm hoping that I could use this medium to meet a few people. If there are any Delhi-based surfers out there, you've got yourself a compadre to take monthly trips to the Indian Ocean breaks -- whether it's Goa, Sri Lanka, or as far away as Indo -- I'll be ready to roll.

Additionally, if anyone could drop some info about the expat social scene in Delhi, I'd highly appreciate it. I'm relatively clueless at the moment, as all of my trips to India thus far have been limited to airport/hotel/conference room. Well, all that's going to change come July 15 -- look forward to meeting you all!

Cheers,

Dave

Apparently there are some package tours to the Andamans (i have not been there) and I wonder what the situation is post-tsunami.

The thread confirms that none of those posters have surfed off the coast of mainland India.

I have not seen anyone surf -- that does not mean that there are no surfers in India. All I am stating is that its not common there. Indian generally don't surf. Most of the foreign tourists end up in Goa, and I did not see any surfers there either. Boogie boards, yes.

I'll miss you when you're gone... even though I didn't even know you were here

Good Luck on your move!

There's also good surf in Kerala & Sri Lanka, but I've been advised that bacteria levels in the water are prohibitively high at the moment. Hopefully that will subside with time. Alas, I guess I'll have to find some new hobbies upon arrival...

Oh OK. I don't know but bacterial contamination + the sea don't mix very well in my mind. You're sure you're not confused with reports on certain inland waters? Also "Kerala & Sri Lanka" are fairly big places for the whole of them to be affected by whatever you heard.

For surfing you'd probably be better off heading to Indonesia yes, although I don't know about Sri Lanka. It's not been developed in India that I know of. There might be possibilities in places in Kerala so maybe someone will some day; one of the reasons that no one has may be that the waters are quite dangerous, with strong and tricky undercurrents. The Andamans might be an exception as mentioned in your article, and from the other forum you pointed to it seems there are some soloists having a go at it in Kerala right.

This seems really interesting, for an organization?

I'm in SF too, have not lived in India, but there's is a book called Holy Cow about an Australian woman who spent 2 years in India w/ her husband. Her situation was very different so the book might not appeal to you but it's out there fyi. I'm sure there are others, I've read more literature of which there is also tons.

Sri Lanka has been a well known surfer hangout for decades. Hikkadewa attracts many Australians who bring over their own boards. The standard is so high that people shoot surf films there. Sri Lankan kids have taken it up too.

In India I've only seen foreigners surf. Kovalam, in Kerala, is probably the best beach. It had a good break and a gnarly drop when I was there. But even Vagator in Goa is surfable sometimes. This past winter I saw two guys who got some nice - if very brief - rides on small waves. I tried it myself but I can't handle those short boards. My surfing days are long behind me and my board was an old Hobie Da Cat - all nine feet of it.
