Hi there!
The institute is located opposite Hotel Jaypee Siddharth, on Pusa Road... would it be advisable to live in south delhi (I see that's the place everybody is heading, right?)
As a single woman on my early 30s I'm planning to rent a flat -sharing on not, not sure- and living a comfy but not high end life... what would be the cost of living for that? I'm sooo afraid my salary may not be enough!
Thanks!

You are right. South Delhi is the place where most people want to be for many reasons but foremost being social life. Hotel Jaypee Siddharth, on Pusa Road is somewhat Central Delhi closer to Connaught Place but well connected by the Metro. IF you wanna be close to work areas like Rajendra Nagar might be an option. If you don't mind the daily commute options in South Delhi could be SafdarJung Enclave/Neeti Bagh/ Vasant Vihar since these areas connect directly to Pusa Road by the ridge road. Somehwhat further options cound be Defence Colony, Jor Bagh, etc---the usual expat places.

You could find a 1 b/r (shared apartment)in the range of Rs 12-15k in most of these areas. If you wanna discuss more details feel free to PM me.

Hi Zaira

My 2cents worth of advice is to stay away from Dwarka as was suggested to you....south Delhi is the place to be ...South extension 1 or 2 and Defence colony .

get in touch and I will try steer you in the right direction

Well Lisa, one piece of wise advice : Since you will be working at Pusa Road, staying in Rajinder Nagar becomes a obvious and the intelligent choice. May be only 10 - 15 mins drive from your work place. It is the most posh colony of Central/West delhi and very safe. You have only high society living there. Also, it is around 20% - 30 % cheaper than South Delhi. One more imporant factor is that you must stay near to work place , specially if you are a foreigner and living/travelling alone. South Delhi is 30 - 45 mins drive and some alternative roads are lonely and risky. Please contact me if you need detailed advice. Thank you.

Hi Zaira,

The last two posts had some sensible suggestions, but I'd just like to add a fe more. I'm your neighbor from up north - Portland, but have been living in Delhi for the past two years.

My suggestions are: Defence Colony, New Friends Colony - if you want central location but more posh/upper class. Other good options would be Jangpura/Jangpura Ext or Lagpat Nagar which are also centrally located and have mixed accomodation depending on the specific neighborhood.

All the best

Thats the first time I have heard of Rajinder Nagar being Posh. The entire area is built like a matchbox with literally no place to drive or park, no playgrounds, open spaces, lawns. You have to be kidding me! And what is 'high society'?

There is only one stretch of land in rajinder Nagar which I can call 'ok' to live in. This being the road that leads from backside of Rajinder Nagar towards Dhaula Kuan.

To the OP, Best bet is to stay in Central Delhi - Chankyapuri, Connaught Place (Asia House etc) or East Patel Nagar (EPN). EPN is about 5 minutes walk from PUSA (Assuming you're going to be working there) and is definitely much more greener, cleaner and not cramped.

Good luck

Mr OS. A well populated place does not means it cant be 'posh'. It is very safe for a foreigner. It has enough parking, except if you have 10 cars per person ! It is one of the oldest settled in Delhi. Most of the blocks have very good lawns. And who needs playground ? Your kids ?

Pray, Tell, where are the lawns or parks cuz I have never seen any! 'Safe' can have a very very different definition for an expat or foreigner than you and me. With the way that place is built and how there is lack of open spaces, may totally scandalize an expat etc. I clearly remember the streets are deserted at night with millions of cars parked on the internal roads. Please compare this with areas like Zor Bagh, Sunder Nagar, Chankayapuri etc where there are loads of 'expats' and you'll realise what I mean by 'posh'.

Hmm let me see. Seems like you've stopped visiting the playground since you were a kid. Back to football may be?

I'm with OrangeStreet on the Rajinder Nagar question, am an expat myself and wouldn't dream of living there. It's all in the eye of the beholder but imho 'posh' in Indian eyes is certainly not guaranteed to mean the same to a foreigner, the tastes are just too different.

Don't know EP Nagar so can't comment on it. If the distance is no problem and your employer pays the rent, you can't go wrong with most areas in south-Delhi. My favourites are still Jor Bagh, Sunder Nagar and Golf links. Chanakyapuri is also ok but the problem is that, except for a small stretch near Malcha marg, it's really deserted at night.

Zaira. I relocated back to Delhi after spending 9 years in New york. I myself use VOIP devices with 2 seperate lines for my international calls. You have broadband available all over Delhi.Depends what your usage would be.. It's relatively affordable(Well its a necessity these days).could end up paying Rs1300 for an unlimited 512kbps connection which is good for VOIP. Other options upto 8Mbps from Airtel are available.
So answer to your question is YES, you should do it.

HI Kaku Chopra,

I am not that young I am 32. Yes I think you are right that I might feel bore in WHO but its a great career choice for me right now. Thanks for suggestion about living in Dwarka. It that place safe. And also is riding Metro safe as well and reliable. I am sorry if my questions sound stupid but I have never been in Metro in Delhi. Whenever I visited Delhi I was using car from a rental company. And I only lived in Friends Colony East where my dad had a place for 3 years when he worked in WHO couple of yours back. Thats why I dont have much idea about WHO. How much are the rent around Dwarka.

Thanks all of you for your response.

Hi Zaira,

I am thinking of moving to Delhi towards the end of the year, maybe October. Please keep in contact if you do end up moving there around that time too and maybe we could help each other out, either living together or looking for places & getting info. My email address is spainsohotrightnow@yahoo.com.a u Kristy (30yrs, aussie)

Hi Lis2412 and Agnes,
I am also looking for a flatshare in Delhi - are you still looking for somewhere? If yes, maybe you are interested in starting a flatshare together?
A little info about me - I am a 31 year old girl from Uk working as a special educator in west delhi. Due to the long travel to my work, I want to find accomodation near a metro station somewhere in central or south delhi (maybe lodi colony, khan market, etc. ..). My budget is only about 10,000Rs per month, preferably less. I am hoping to live with other foreigners who are easy going and sociable. Please let me know if you are interested and maybe we can find a flatshare together?
Kirsty
