Moving from California to Delhi

I am single girl planning to move from California to Delhi to work for WHO (office is located in Indraprastha Estate
Mahatma Gandhi Marg) for next 2 years. I am planning to rent 2 bed room secuired apartment in Delhi. Since I am not going to drive I need to stay some place close to work or atleast commutable and also close to gym restaurant grocery. I also have no idea how much living cost in Delhi for apartment transpostation grocery and gym. I also dont know whats the option to commute from one place to another other than bus and how much it cost also. I dont have much idea about Delhi so any kind of help will be appreciated.

There is a Metro station just opposite the WHO office across the road , so you can look for places close to the metro line. I can suggest Noida in the suburbs. The metro line from Indraprastha Estate to Noida is 90 % complete and is likely to be operational by this summer. Noida has cheaper accomodation , is greener and cleaner and has well developed infrastructure as regards roads and connectivity to Delhi etc as also one of the best shopping, eating & leisure hubs in the National Capital Region - Sector 18. There are a host of Shopping Malls, Hypermarkets , Departmental stores , Restaurants , Pubs , Gyms/spas for you to choose from.

Travel time on the proposed Metro would be about 20 minutes I would assume. Alternatively , 40 minutes by road.

I would think your best source of information would come from those who are currently working at WHO. Have you communicated with your soon-to-be boss with these questions?

Sunder Nagar is one locality where lots of expats live, its only a few kms from WHO office.
Areas like west Rajinder nagar on the metro route is another option.

Hi Zaira and welcome to IM.

below are a few threads to get you started (as you can imagine - the "moving to Delhi" question gets asked alot).

Bruce's suggestion is a good one. Undoubtedly there will be a good pool of knowledge at WHO as to what is most suitable in terms of location for easy access to work. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. No I havent yet contacted my soon to be boss as I dont know whom I will be working with. But the problem with most of the people who I know working in WHO or used to work in WHO is that they all have family thats why they tend to rent house and live with family. And since most of them has car thats why they dont have to worry about commuting. But as I will be most like for 11 month thats why I dont think I will be getting a car thats why my preference might be different than others working the same place.

Zaira,

There is a community for expatriates in Delhi that is very active and has several threads regarding apartments, room-mates etc. Its called yuni-net and is a great resource. If you need information on it feel free to send me a PM and I'd be happy to assist.

HI Rohan,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I am not yet sure when I am coming but most likely thats going to happen in this fall I think. Once I fixed my date I will more actively search to know people. Right now I am just trying to have some idea how its going to be living in Delhi for next couple of years.

HI Kaku Chopra,

I am not that young I am 32. Yes I think you are right that I might feel bore in WHO but its a great career choice for me right now. Thanks for suggestion about living in Dwarka. It that place safe. And also is riding Metro safe as well and reliable. I am sorry if my questions sound stupid but I have never been in Metro in Delhi. Whenever I visited Delhi I was using car from a rental company. And I only lived in Friends Colony East where my dad had a place for 3 years when he worked in WHO couple of yours back. Thats why I dont have much idea about WHO. How much are the rent around Dwarka.

Thanks all of you for your response.

I can say Metro is safe enough. As long as you have you eyes and ears open Delhi overall is relatively safe. Dwarka is my opinion is pretty far from WHO although it has a direct Metro Link. The nearer places are Mayur Vihar and perhaps Noida.

Thanks Rohan. I dont think I want to stay that far away from work. Since I have no idea about the distance part but also I want to stay close to everything so atleast over the weekend I can go to restaurant and movies and everything else. And for me safety is such a big concern because I have lived in India by myself. I couldnt PM you because I dont how to PM. Sorry I am really new here

Moving to Delhi

Hi Zaira,

Just my rupees worth on this topic. Have lived and worked in Delhi for over 4 years now. All good advice above but I personally would have been wary of living too far out even if you have a good Metro link.

Although my experiences of the Metro have been good ones I would have still tried to live nearer the office than Noida or Dwarka as your commute, especially from Dwarka, will be quite far and I think you will find yourself doing a lot professionally and socially in Delhi itself rather than the suburbs so each time you will need to commute in. Depending on what you can afford I would have looked at places in Central/South Delhi so that the office wouldn't be that far. The area I live in is very near Central Delhi and only a few minutes by car/rickshaw from Connaught Place and Khan Market. It is also only a quick cycle rickshaw ride to the nearest Metro station. At the weekends I find myself continually coming into Central and parts of south Delhi so wouldn't want to be further out.

Just my thoughts!

HI Indianworker,

Thanks a lot for your advice. I think I feel the same as well. I do want to live in Delhi because I dont feel that comfortable depending on Metro all the time because I dont want to feel stuck in something goes wrong in my commute. I was only planning to stay somewhere in Delhi but since I dont know much about neighborhood thats why I was trying to get some idea what neighborhood might be a good option for me.

HI Agnes,

At this point since I dont know my time of coming to Delhi so its kind of difficult to commit to it. When I am close to my arrival I might have some better idea what I would like to do. And also since my family is from Bangladesh and I am also not sure if any of my family would like to stay with me when I will be in Delhi. But lets stay in touch and if we are in Delhi the same time I would definiately would like the option to be able to share apartment. My email address is sf_dia@yahoo.com.
