Making a doco in Delhi
Hi expats in Delhi,
I am an Australian filmmaker and I will soon be coming to shoot a doco in Delhi for the BBC about three times over the next 2 years, for up to 3 months at a time I am looking to rent a room with expats in a good area in Delhi ie central New Delhi or South Delhi. I will get my own driver etc when I get there. I am a female with film equipment so I want to be safe and also hang out with westerners when I am not working I have already lived and worked in Delhi on and off over the last 5 years so I am very accustomed to its good and bad points, including some fairly hairy situations with the men which I certainly aim to avoid at all costs. I lived with an Indian family in the past who were lovely. I think I'd love to flat with expats this time around so I can feel when I am not working I can truly be myself which is a laid-back aussie any cool expats out there in a great house looking for a nice low-maintenance flatmate? reminds me of a recent movie --"range de basanti"...... where a lone british woman comes to make a doumentary in india ....encounters men..who are not so bad and lechereous!
and the story goes on....

i dont think all Indian men are bad and lecherous... some of my favourite people in the world are Indian men (particularly the older gentlemen)
I think especially Northern Indian men's attitudes are questionable to western women ie thinking that they are all prostitutes etc and treating them accordingly cate |

>I think especially Northern Indian men's attitudes are questionable to western women ie thinking that they are all prostitutes etc and treating them accordingly
I am a north Indian male and i've been been with westernwomen and let me tell you that i've (or for that matter my other male fraternity) have no way felt that way about any of this, in fact one of them is married to a Parisian and other one is in a relationship with a Venezuelan. Lady, you may have run into wrong people but for whatever its worth pl dont brandish the entire north Indian male fraternity ![]() |

hey mate'
I certainly dont think all northern indian men at any rate - as I said some of my favourite people in the world are from india (yes northern india) and who are like family to me I can only go on my experiences of having to interview a huge cross-section of men in Delhi from various backgrounds over the last 5 years for my film work. There were may instances where the situations turned quite dangerous, particularly if I went to interview them by myself. I couldnt even understand what was happening and why it was happening over and over until I asked them and a many of them blatently told me. In their own words, " Alot of people here consider western women to be very loose, like a taxi". Believe me I would have rather had other experiences and formed a different opinion which certainly doesn't go across the board of 'northern indian men' Appologies for any unhappiness caused to you. |

Did not mean to start another debate on this much discussed topic of indian men and, men in general the world over!
I was myself in a relationship with a romanian girl , and I can understand both points of view.....she could never understand some of the things about india and some of my indian freinds (both male and female), but on the other hand she was like...indian men really take care of their women, they know how to make them feel different....in many ways that western women don't (guess some women like the subtle possesiveness that men have for them) and some other things like this! guess our first experiences make a lasting impression! |

yes I totally agree - about the debate issue - I am just trying to find some good acommodation
Also I totally agree with you re indian men can be incredible gentlemen - something I love about Indian men and something that is getting rarer in the west as I said my impression does not cover the whole spectrum but yes, when I am in Delhi, I have learned to be very cautious... ![]() |

believe me its actually happened
I was in a park working once and was followed by about 20 men - probably what made up one of the cricket teams for that morning. they were cat-calling etc and I turned around and called them "dogs" in Hindi which the servants had taught me to say in the house where I was staying. needless to say they all howled with laughter at my accent and forgot what they were following me for in the first place at least it diffused the situation... |
