To answer your other questions: one *can* get furnished apartments but they cost a good bit more. You have to figure out if you could just buy the furniture for the difference in rent over a year (or however long you want to stay).
Most renters require an 11 month lease and a 1-2 month security deposit. The broker's fee is a month's rent.

You have to pay utilities yourself. A separate water and electricity meter is generally good - that way you don't get cheated.

About water and electricity - the advantange of 'posh' locations is that there are fewer power cuts and water is more easily available.

Just to add both security deposits and brokers fees can be haggled over and reduced to some degree.... the potential to do this increases as the rentals go up and might not be possible at 8000 but it never hurts to ask....

Malviya Nagar and Saket aren't too close to JNU ....

Vasant Kunj will be as far, or even closer, depending.

Malviya Nagar -(2 BHK rent 10K-15k approx) for an empty flat) Focus here.

I hope You can just plan to stay at some hotel in the start, and once you are in JNU, you will have a lots of friends staying around and they could help you the best.

Doesn't JNU have residential facilities, i am sure they do because i had a cousin who was living on campus from what i recall... have you explored that option?

JNU has hostels. Never been inside one, but from outside they don't look all that comfortable.

Couple of girls I know say they are bad- dingy and dirty, but they are a little hoity toity and Indian university hostels are what they are.

I am betting that they don't encourage couples too.

If you do hostel accommodation you will not be staying with your boyfriend - that's a given

And they're...well... college hostels. They're not great but they're not horrible either. It's what you make of it. Also the cleaner you can keep it the better. I've been to some of my friends' rooms and they were pretty okay. I think there is also an international students' hostel at JNU but I have never been in it.

Sadly I am not a JNU student, it's my boyfriend who is. So we couldn't stay on campus even if we wanted to!

I have another question though. We would like to stay in a hotel near JNU for the first couple of weeks while we look for an apartment. Are there any budget hotels anywhere in that area? I've been researching but to no avail, as all the budget hotels I'm finding are in the tourist areas.

Ok, so I've been in Delhi for just over a week now. We're staying in a guest house in Vasant Kunj while we look for a place to live. We met with a real estate agent in Munirka last week and he showed us a few places. He was really pushing us to take a 2bdrm apt in Munirka Vihar for 20,000 plus 3mo security deposit. It seemed extraordinarily high and we bargained him down to 18,000 but have since decided not to take the place as we were told by friend that it was still much too high. Thoughts?
We want to live in Munirka or maybe Katwaria Sarai so are still looking but have been shocked to find that furniture is so expensive. We know someone who is moving out so will take some furniture from her but we need a bed, fridge and a few other things. Are there any cheap furniture stores? Or perhaps secondhand stores? I'm not really too jazzed about spending 12,000 on a bed..

Bargained the real estate agent down? You should be talking to the owner; the agent gets a commission on what you negotiate- unless the owner lives away from Delhi. (In which case, be careful of posted signed leases, how do you know it is signed by the owner?- ask the association there, they have an office.)

Rent of arouond 15k is closer to the market; my information is six months to a year old.

Buy second hand furniture and stuff, will be cheaper. Can't help with where. Or look at renting.

I think its better if your boy friend get some help from his class mates. Being a foreigner its difficult to get a good and cheep accommodation. Every dealer looks to cash the opportunity.

I thing you can get some good flat in munirika for 12-15K per month. As for furniture you can buy foldable bed, chairs and tables(real cheep). If you want a better furniture then go to Gupta Market in Lajpat Nagar for second hand furniture.

When I was studying in delhi I did buy foldable furniture for me.
It was fine for couple of years.

Table was some 200 Rs
Bed 500 - 600 Rs (Single bed)
Chair -250 Rs.

But First look for the accommodation.
