I think that is a good idea.
Once you are settled in, I'd recommend you talk to a local doctor: they know the score in your city, your locality, even. That's something that the doc back in UK can never find out from the NHS database! The only thing about protection from bites is that it all sounds good, until you come to do it on a day after day after day after day basis! Maybe it takes more disciple than I have. We have nets on the windows, netscreens on the doors. We use mossie-poison plugins and we sleep under a net. I still get bitten regularly. I certainly can't be doing with spraying myself with repellent every day and I guess that sitting around my house in only a pair of underpants all day is hardly taking note of the 'cover up' advice. But hey, they bite through clothes anyway. However, if it was not for the above precautions, I'd be a red-raw pin cushion, running screaming from the country.

Hi Tintin,
My advice would be to carry Anti malarial meds. but Take them only after you discuss the situations in Delhi with a local Doctor. Its very cheap to consult a Dr. in India like 2 or 4 pounds Max. He would advice you if you need to be on Med. or not. Delhi is Okay Kalkag etc is not surrounded by huge mosquito regims etc. but yes take 100% serious precations if you are planning North east India.

I'll be on Lariam - and in India - in two weeks time. If those touts drive me mad, I'll just blame it on the pills. But seriously, I know they may have side effects, such as mood swings. ![]() |

So, the doc and I went through his little black book on drugs a couple of days ago. I forget all the various metric categories, but on the overall score, for India, mefloquine ( generic for Lariam) looked right to him and me - I noted that mefloquine scored 2 on the price metric, there was one there that scored 11 ! - and since I've tolerated it well before, that's what I will take - the insurance (major biopharma corporate plan ) will pay for it, with 3 co-pays of USD 7 (=USD21) for the 12 week supply.
Separately, for overcoming jet lag and for sleeping on the plane he chose zolpidem(generic for ambien); I've nevah taken hypnotics or crap like that before but I don't shake off jet lag the way I used to and I have to remind myself that I'm not as sturdy as I once was so shouldn't just let things work themselves out but actively help things along. Hence zolpidem. -skk |
