Living in Gurgaon, working in Oklha

Dear All:

I will be working in the Oklha industrial estate. We are thinking of living in Gurgaon, mainly because it seems that the accomodations in Gurgaon are larger, newer, and comparatively cheaper than central Delhi.

Question: Can anyone give us a general sense of how long the rush hour commute in a private car would be (both in the mornings and in the evenings?)

An hour or less each way would be fine (call me crazy)....too much beyond that might make it unworkable.

We were in Delhi in the summer and got several differing answers, so any thoughts that you might have would be MOST welcome.

Many thanks,
WW

I'd say at least an hour each way, probably more. Worse with the added delays during the rainy season. And Metro construction in many parts of the city (including the line running to Gurgaon) only adds to the traffic craziness.

Sorry if this isn't the response you were hoping for...

Bad idea! In Delhi you have trouble commuting, even if you live close to work. As curtdfw says there will be delays during monsoon, construction and lots of other delays that you can not foresee. The one hour can easily become two or more hours.

The only person I know that does not complain is a friend that can walk to work in 5 minutes.

I would say live as close as possible to your work, especially as living in India will throw up lots of other difficulties which will be time consuming.

The present day commuting woes on the Delhi-Gurgaon express way are expected to be over soon.
The civic aminities in Gurgaon is much worse than Delhi although most apartment complexes have alternate arrangements like captive power generation, but they cost.
Like others I highlight the advantages of living close to ones work place. I spend more than two and half hours each day commuting to my office.
Since you will be working in Okhla Industrial Area where my office is situated I would recommend looking for accomodation in GK-II. The main road in Okhla Industrial area get clogged with all sorts of vehicles including heavy trucks.

All:

Thank you very much. I see a clear trend developing here.

One other question: is the Delhi Metro yellow line, when completed, an option from Gurgaon to Oklha?

(Hitanshu: sent you a message.)

Keep about 1.5 hours aside for commute either way , there are good days when you can do it in under an hour and some where it takes longer...

No such luck. There's a branch planned to Okhla, but I think it's a few years out. Jyotirmoy's comment about looking in GK-II (or perhaps GK-I or East of Kailash, depending on what part of Oklha you're headed to) makes for a better commute.

More than an hour easily one way.

If Okhla is your choice I would suggest you stay in NOIDA or Surajkund ( Faridabad ) - both are much closer and I'd say about 20 - 30 minutes one way.

Also are you going to commute by car or is Metro the preffered option once it starts.

Noida and Gurgaon Metros would start operating by 2010 Mid.

I have the same problem. My son works in Mohan Industrial Place, near Okhla. Presently he spends one hour reaching his office. We plan to buy an apartment. What would be the best place to stay. GK is out, too congested and costly.

Malviya Nagar is a fairly cheap area & it's a lot closer than Gurgaon (which is a long way out!). I haven't priced GK-I but my guess is it's more expensive, but a nice place to live.

Looking at other threads on Gurgaon, it seems like it doesn't have incredibly reliable power/water, either.

Noida might be an option coming from the other way. I'm not sure of the timing of travel, tho.

There are gurgaon quality apartments in Noida and Surajkund.
Given that, not much reason to live in a place like Gurgaon with no infrastructure and commute 1 hour plus each way in crazy suicidal traffic.
