Is 35 lak a year after tax a good salary?
That I believe is 300,000 IRP a month.
I haven't been to Delhi yet and have been offered a job for this salary. The office is in Gurgaon and I believe its a great place to live. 3 bedroom Apartments on the net go for between 40,000 IRP to 80,000. In a good complex with pool etc. Can I expect a good standard at these prices? The average price for a great (Indian) dinner for two including a bottle of wine and beers is around 2000 IRP (I'm told.) Is it safe to say we can live very well on about 100,000IRP a month? Cheers |

Umm, though it is a very good salary, a bottle of bad imported wine costs close to 2000 (1600) in a upscale resteraunt (not a 5 star hotel) in Hyderabad.
And of course, Delhi/Gurgaon rentals can go much higher, though the OP may be lucky since these have crashed recently. Other biggies are education (if international schools), an expat lifestyle and travel/holidays. All in all, a pretty/very good salary, but, depending on lifestyle, no. of family members etc, can be 'not so huge'. Quote:

For more than 95% of Indians, I am sure its an excellent dream offer....including me....
...don't mind exchanging the job. But I know few of my friends who earn more. The offer depends on role / designation / experience / education / etc. If the offer of 3lakhs per month is after tax its really good. But, who knows....you might deserve more... ![]() Hence, I can not answer whether its a good offer for you or not. But, with that money you can easily live comfortable here. A good 3bedroom apartment in a good complex with pool and gym in Gurgaon will not cost you more than 30 - 35k (unfurnished). You can easily afford to have driver and servents too... ![]() Cheers! Thanks for the replies a big help.
On the restaurant question. Is 2000 IRP about right for a great Indian meal for two incl. beer and a bottle of Indian wine (They say it's quite drinkable and inexpensive around US$7 a bottle) What would a car and driver cost and a live in maid/cook a month? Is Gurgaon a vibrant suburb full of good/great restaurants/bars/movie theaters etc. |

So let me get this straight. All the prices quoted here are for Indians? I'm an expat does that change things?

At a resteraunt, no. You pay what an Indian pays.
As far as help, cook, driver are concerned, I believe expats often pay way too much, though some premium is given for an English speaking employee. But even so. In any case, that is a matter of negotiation. You do not pay more for utilities or anything else either. |

But does Gurgaon have a lot of good restaurants/bars/movie theaters/supermarkets etc. compared to other suburbs? I would rather live there because of the work location
So am I right in assuming that a good english speaking maid/cook would be around 5000 IRP a month? And a english speaking driver (24/7?) around 5,000 to 7,000 IRP a month? |

Delhi has better entertainment options. Gurgaon is good enough for most daily stuff you want to do, including all the above.
The pricing for help is well on the generous side. |

It has plenty of malls, full of theme/fancy restaurants, bars, pubs. The supermarket culture is more popular in Gurgaon compared to Delhi, and you would get most of the things to support your lifestyle. Quote:
Overall the salary is great, and you would be able to live a very good life for around 100k a month (20% here and there). If you go to a 'very' fancy restaurant, then you end up spending like Rs.2000 per head on food and wine, otherwise in very good snobby places the average cost would be around Rs.1000 per head. And if you talk about average upper middle class places, it woould hover around Rs.500 per head. |

In Delhi, I find that you two people can eat out at nice restaurants quite well on this amount. The really fancy places will cost more, but if you are just talking about a good meal at a nice restaurant with good food and a nice ambience- an upper middle class place- then yes. My husband and I frequently take his parents out for dinner in Delhi and all four of us eat for about 50 dollars (less than 3K rupees) and that includes one drink each. I thought it was very reasonable. It could be that Capt knows where the really good joints are! I think the wine is very drinkable at 7-15 USD a bottle, however in a restaurant it will cost more than that, just like anywhere else in the world. The biggest expense would be tuition if you have children. Private schools in that area could eat up your paycheck fast. Otherwise, I think you have a very good handle on how much rent you'd pay and how much you'd spend to go out. Gurgaon, and Delhi in general, have some extremely fancy and expensive places, but I don't think there is any reason to go out to that level of expense unless you are trying to break into the very lively and intense super cool social scene there. Think NYC. There are ultra-cool people who spend a ton of money at fashionable clubs, but you can go to a decently cool club much cheaper. Delhi is like that. Also, if you haven't already rented a place, I suggest you look for a place that has a club membership option. Then you can use their gym and restaurant and bar, etc. This might save you some expense later as these things can get pricey and really it's hard to exercise outdoors in that area because of the traffic, pollution. Sometimes it's easier just to walk down to the club for dinner/dranks too rather than going out. |

Reg Driver & accommodation
I would say you can get a good driver at 7000, plus over time charges. If you are coming on expats terms its advisable to lease a car than buying it outright as you dont have to worry about spare car or driver absence etc.
Also regarding accommodation are you looking at furnished accommodation or would you be moving your household goods. The rentals would depend on the same. Regards, Raghu Quote:

Thanks for the input.
My wife and I like hole in the wall type restaurants with great food. I don't car so much about posh decor etc. In fact the more basic it is the better. As long as it's clean, safe to eat there (health wise) and the food is fresh. We're not fancy 5 star people at all. I would hope that we would have a good choice of little local places (even thai) that serve really good food and beer and wine. Maybe even take our own wine if that's allowed. All for around 1000- 2000 Irp all up for two. (Maybe I'm dreaming but that's what I'm told by local Indian people here) Are there good movie places in Gurgaon to see hollywood/ foriegn films? |
