In need of gym/pool in Delhi

Hi all,
I don't know if I can ask this question because of advertising and stuff, but is there a good gym with a swimming pool in Central/South Delhi that I would be able to join? What do people do - join gyms in hotels, or has the gym thing taken off in India?
Thanks!

gym/pool in Delhi

There are a couple of classy, expensive gyms in Delhi apart from what big hotels offer. I went to a little place in Lakpat Nagar called Life Line. (address: II-K-28, Lajpat Nagar). The machines were OK, I was the only European in the place and was given plenty of attention. I enjoyed going there - but there's no pool.

There was a post here about a gym run by an American lady in Delhi. Good luck with the IM search function.

Hi Flicka,

I found it hard to find a good gym in Delhi without paying an outrageous sum.
I swam in the pool at The Continental hotel, Vasant Vihar, a few times. It wasn't clean - on one occasion there was so much long black hair in the pool that I was pulling it from between my fingers at the end of a lap - eww!
The gym at the Radisson hotel near the airport is small but nice with friendly staff and is not located in a basement - beats me as to why most hotel gyms are!
Good luck.

Near Moolchand Flyover and GK-1

hey,

There's a sports complex near the Kendriya Viyalaya, (Central School) adjacent to the Moolchand Flyover and GK-1. Not so far from Fab India.

The complex has an olympic sized swimming pool and a Gym. I think that a membership is 1000 Rs a month to swim, not sure if it includes the gym, though. There are a number of dance and martial arts classes held as well. But don't quote me on the prices.

By the looks of it, most of the clientelle are Indian, but fairly good representation of both genders. Some of the classes have an international turnout.

I also recall that there was a gym in Hauz Kaus Village, called Powerhouse, but have never ventured inside there.

Also you'll find another public sports complex near JNU. I think two, one in the University and another near the adjacent Govt. School. In Munirka, near the village there's a public swimming pool complex. Story goes it was built and dedicated to a Haryanvi Olympic medallist who grew up around the place.

cheers,

Tak

Have a look at the one mentioned by Tnog earlier, at Munirka. Its in a lane off the main road next to the small market, near the temple. Has a gym and swimming pool, the latter may not be too clean.

Else hotels if budget permits..Vasant Continental, Hyatt Regency.

I've just been through this saga myself. Probably the nicest gym around in South Delhi is at the Hyatt. Treadmils, bikes, steppers, heaps of machines, free weights, a smith bench press machine - and of course a swimming pool. Good qualified instructors as well - but the price.....ouch! 100,000 rupees for a single off peak membership if I remember rightly. Have also looked at a smaller place off Mulcha Marg called Esporto. Not big, but plenty of all the right machines, free weights, steppers, etc. A bit more sane at 35,000 rupees, but still pretty pricey. There are a few standalone gyms around that seem to be pretty well equipped - but if you want a gym and a pool - most likely a hotel is what you may have to use.

There must be lot of services they are offering..which might seem standard to western sensibilities but are not common in India...

Like the Gym I go to, charges Rs.1500 a month, i.e. Rs. 18,000 per year ... but they don't have any facilities like lockers, showers, sauna, steam, etc...(they have sauna, steam etc. but its not part of standard package and they are charged extra for...but I am afraid anyone hardly uses them.. )

Its simply cardiovascular exercisers, weight machines, and weights...no frills...but its still upper middle class by Delhi standards..

don't even ask what the FULL membership fee was for the Hyatt! I think even by western standards the prices are pretty high - although the one I mentioned on Mulcha Marg did have changing rooms, sauna, shower, etc.

I guess you are talking about Malcha Marg (pronounced Maalcha)..

Hyatt is a 5 star hotel, I am sure that US $ 2500 won't be an odd amount for a 5 star hotel to charge for a yearly membership in west as well...

I can well imagine USD2500 being quite possible in New York or LA! But still pretty pricey. My last Gym at home cost rupee 20,000 per year for a full size olympic swimming pool, gym, spa, and massage. Plus it was used by sports teams, competitive commonwealth swimmers, etc - so full of really fit people (which could be kind of depressing on occasions).
