I have the vision but not the skill!
Hi guys,
I am a newly arrived Expat living in Lajpat Nagar. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a really good tailor in Delhi? I may be aiming too high here, but since the art of tailoring seems to virtually extinct in Ireland (my home) and I have several ideas for some quite adventurous pieces that I would like to get made, I thought maybe somebody might know of a good tailor who speaks english, for whom I could sketch (probably badly!) a design, and he/she might be able to make it. I'm talking western clothes here, and not your average suit and shirt style thing (though I did find a great suit maker, but he was unwilling to branch out! )I'm happy to pay quite a bit as these designs have been in my head for quite some time and I just don’t have the skills or the know-how myself. Maybe I'm on a wild goose chase? Either way, you're advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Hey Navi,
Thanks for that, I've used just dial befoe. The point is I need more than just your average tailor as I'm looking to design a garment. Thanks for the reply though! |

Hello Saorise,
I had a similar question a while back for fancy ball gowns and prom dresses in Delhi, you could check out the thread in delhi shopping. In fact I had a wonderful dress made by a lovely lady at a boutique called Studio Pride in Defence Colony. She isnt just a tailor; she designs lots of western outfits for all occasions and does a fantastic job. Many of her designs are sold all over the world to western shops too. It will definately depass your average indian tailor price, but one thing is for sure, you will NOT be let down. Attention to detail and quality is excellent. PM me if you would like the exact location. Rohan: nice to "see" you! Still in Dubai? Victoria |

Studio Pride
Hi Valini,
I saw your recommendation about Studio Pride. Please could you give me the contact and address details for the boutique. I will be in India only for a week and would like to get an evening gown/western dress for a wedding occassion. Do you think Studio Pride can make me a dress in about 4-5 days? Also, it would be good to get an idea as to the price range for something nice and decent? Thanks, Zeba |

Here's a NY Times article about a tailoring adventure in Delhi. A little old, but the places mentioned were active in 2008...

Hi Zeba,
Studio Pride is at C20 block in Defence Colony, a couple of hundred yards from the main market (I don't have the number sorry). I think it would be too tight to go one day and get it done within 4 days. It's not like a regular Indian tailors. They make many dinner party / embassy ball dresses and so on, so if you visit when they have a lrge orer it could be tight. They will need to do one or two fittings too probably. Alternatively, if you manage to contact the lady and send her your size plus a design or style, they can make the first cut before you get there then it could happen in the time frame. Quality is superb and you won't go wrong. Price will totally depend on the material you choose and the complexity of the design. I really couldn't be more precise! Hope this helps ![]() |
