Delhi: upgrading my terrace

One of the best features of my flat is the copious amount of terrace space. But right now my terrace is just featureless floors and walls. Looking around the skyline near my house, I see lots of lovely terraces all done up with plants and bamboo walls and shelter to block the sun. My question is this: where do you go to get your terrace done up? Are there home improvement stores? Or do you hire a contractor/designer?

I don't need anything fancy. I just want to be comfortable in the few months I'll actually be able to enjoy being outside.

Most people buy awnings, (collapsible or corrugated sheets) bamboo stuff, plansts etc themselves and get them fixed by the friendly neighbourhood carpenter.

Of course, you could pay an interior decorator (exterior, in this case) 30 percent more and get them to do it.

Suggest the first option. You can ask people around you where stuff is available, or if you indicate which area of (presumably) Delhi somebody here may be able to help.

Plants, at the nearest nursery.

I'm in Hauz Khas. And I'm quite new to India, so you really have to spell it out for me. Where do I buy things like bamboo and awning?

I am very familiar with Delhi, but don't live there.

My guess (till better informed local members reply).. is you will probably get these at Munirka, maybe even Sarojini Nagar closeby.

But what I would do, ask either a neighbour or a carpenter/even an electrician or such you normally use, they are sure to know.

Awnings are quite easily available, those striped collapsible types, in Delhi. Many people use them, or synthetic prefabricated corrugated sheets. And bamboo of whatever type should not be a problem either; commonly used for trellis work for plants.

Hey Dave,

I don't know about awnings but I know a couple of great nurseries where you can buy loads of plants with or without pots and also other places to buy pots. Local nursery in Hauz Kas may be bit pricey. We plan to go plant shopping one weekend you can join us.
I hope you havent forgotten who waghobha is .

I think I know who Waghobha is. That's where Yoda lives, right?

Let me know when you're going plant shopping. I definitely want to go. We're out of town this weekend and next weekend... don't go without us!

i have just moved to Delhi in Hauz Khas and have someone fitting a bamboo screen right now. If it's good I can pass on the contact if that's helpful.
You can get OK plants in the nursery in the entrance to the park by the tennis club on Africa Avenue which is really close but would love details of better nurseries.

I'm very new to India Mike and can't suss if I put personal stuff on the site even if it is just the name of a local carpenter which no-one outside Hauz Khas should care about.
So what do I do?

Kate being a new member she can't PM yet, it takes a certain nr. of posts + period of membership.

Just give the carpenter's info Kate, we'll promise not to lash you... yet (Make sure that's what the carpenter wants though. I could think of better things than some IM pranksters paging me.)

Private Messaging is only available for members with >5 posts and membership of 15 days (latest settings I remember, it gets tweaked from time to time).

We did that because of ever increasing abuse, and a heap of unwanted PMs being received by new members, especially female ones, and often from people who only signed up to trawl through our female membership.

Sorry: it is a nuisance sometimes, but it does work to advantage on the whole.

Can you tell me more about what he did for you and how much he charged?

Also, I live in HK too and we're always looking to meet our neighbors... drop me a PM once you get permission and we'll have a coffee! (Or if a mod can send her my email address, that's cool too.)

Sure my partner has been here for a year and I've just moved to Delhi from the UK. It would be good to meet neighbours from outside the usual ex pat circuits.
