Delhi: Setting up in India?

Hi,

I'm going to be moving to Delhi with my family from London for 2 years and staying in touch with the UK is going to be very important. Once we have sorted out renting an apartment, how long can we expect it to take to get broadband installed? Who would you recommend we use to get the best possible connection - I would prefer to pay a little bit more and get a quicker/more reliable service.

Also what about Satellite TV?

Thanks

Alphabet

well there are lot of options you may choose Airtel or Sify or MTNL and there may be few more broadband service providers where you stay in Delhi. Airtel though is a good choice since their maintenance service is better than most! Might take a day or two once you have the documents needed, usually an ID and proof of residence.

Funnily enough we happen to be having the exact same discussion (inbetween the odd joke and making fun of each other) over in the electronics forum....

as Chronos has said, plenty of providers to choose from. I think Airtel probably have the fastest plans available (7-8 meg connections) - but would be very dependent on where you live and how close to an exchange you were. Re TV - both satellite and cable are available - but I'm leaning towards the idea that satellite might be more reliable - in which case I'll be going for a dish TV connection.

oh and by the way.....Welcome to IndiaMike

@brownboy
For Sattelite tv, Tata sky picture quality is much better than Dish one. Please do check both of them thoroughly before making a choice........
btw if you could postponed your purchase for couple of months, Reliance is also launching Big TV....which should bring more competition in the sector.

thanks for the advice Deeps! The only reason we aren't that keen on tata is that our family had Tata Indicomm cell phones and the service was a nightmare - so things Tata are not the flavour of the month for us...

anyway - not meaning to hijack this thread........

Reg Satellite TV

We have Tata Sky satellite connection and it gives good image quality. You can also check your account status and payment details on your TV and make payments via internet.
I have heard that Dish TV does not have good after sales service as they do not employ good technicians. So keep that in mind if when choosing a satellite service provider.

I agree with brownboy66 abt the Tata Indicomm service and wireless internet. Their service sucks. But Tata Sky is better. I have experienced both.

great post waghobha - feeling much better about Tata sky as a result!

I should say - while we found the Tata Indicomm customer service to be completely dismal - their wireless data service worked really well. We had it plugged into a laptop when travelling and the performance was pretty good for a 2G service. Also we have a Tata Safari car and its running really well (fantastic aircon during the summer - best I've ever come across anywhere in Asia).

Anyway - REALLY must not hijack this thread....

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is a satellite/cable provider that carries SKY, Al Jazeera English, the UK premiership, etc,

I have had a look at Dish and Tata and I couldn't sell anything there.

We are about to move to India (New Delhi) after having spent the last 20 years in Africa, I think it will be a bit of a change........

Also, thanks to IndiaMike........

With regards to TV? Do you have an active TV connection in the UK to access for all your British TV and live broadband connection? I am planning to install Slingbox in the UK when I move to India. With that, you can access everything you watch in UK via broadband and control your TV as if you were sitting in front of it. Fantastic little device.. OK, watching TV on your computer may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I can't miss my footy when I'll be in India..

Good luck finding an Internet connection fast enough to run Slingbox. I paid for Airtel's fastest connection in Delhi, and it was never enough to stream video.
