Delhi, Need a place to stay for 1-2 months help!
Hi everyone,
I am having a lot of trouble finding a place to stay in Delhi. I am going to be in Delhi on business for 1-2 months. I will need a place which is secure, A/C (I'll be there for jUly and aug!) Internet, clean, fully furnished...good expat area, near Govt buildings and hospitals. I have found a couple of apartments but would it be wise to move into them right away? I feel nervous booking an apt over the internet. I can only afford up to 700 USD a month and most places are asking for alot more. Any advice? Do you think I should book a hotel for a couple of nights and look around in person for an apt...or save the money and go directly for an apt over the internet? I am so confused. I am arriving on July 27, we are a couple and are most concerned about cleanliness, security and budget! Please any help would be appreciated! If you could also recommend a good hotel to stay in while trying to find a short term apt. Thank you. |

700 USD a month is not a lot at all for Delhi for an 'expat area , fully furnished' kind of place. Plus you want it only for two months.. many landlords will prefer longer leases.
There are not too many exclusive 'expat areas', and ones which have a concentration of expats (eg Vasant Vihar) are very expensive.. roughly thrice your budget, for a medium sized apartment. If you indicate your place of work, somebody may suggest a general area, or other options Internet quotes are usually 15/20% more than market rates, in my experience. edit: normally, internet, electricity, utilities etc are extras and not included in a lease... but for a two month period, it is possible to have this included, but will be difficult within your budget and preferred lifestyle.

Maybe you have to look at a smaller apartment in Gurgaon or Noida and commute more (if work is in Delhi).. but these are not too close to 'government offices and hospitals'.
It would also help if you could post what size of apartment you are looking at. |

I agree with capt_mahajan, that in any area that is considered a nice expat area, for a fully furnished a/c apt with internet and security, you could be looking at double what you want to pay, especially if they are getting you to book it sight-unseen. You can specify your work location (neighborhood) so perhaps we can help you more, otherwise it would probably be wise to stay in a hotel while you look around.

Thanks for the feedback. Well I need a 1-2 bedroom apt. I would be willing to pay up to 850 USD and I would need to be flexiable, with month to month lease. Do you think it is safe to book over the internet...I've been following this apt,it's been online since March for 23,500 INR, in Daryaganj, Central D, I just wonder if this is a good area, or why has it not been taken by now?
What do you think? As for my work area, well I am visiting the major hospitals in the city, I'm still not sure where all of these are located! |

No expat area is near government buildings..all major government buildings are located in central Delhi..
I would advice you to take up an hotel as Delhis landors would be too skeptical for a 1-2 month lease..and even if they give they would be charging a premium.. |

Any advice on this area: 23,500 INR, in Daryaganj, Central Delhi?
Also, they have Preet Vihar, Delhi for the same price. If I do take a hotel, where do you suggest I start looking for an apartment, do I just pick up the newspaper? What is the best way to find a good apartment in a short amount of time?! |

Darya ganj is crowded, noisy, none too clean and is certainly not an expat area.
I would second an earlier suggestion.. stay in a hotel while you look around. Internet booking may be fine; but I would not part with any money in advance... you will almost certainly be the loser. Quick ways of finding apartments: newspapers, reliable real estate agent. I would stick to the newspapers, unless somebody known recommends a realtor. They offer a very poor quality of service in much of India, and are likely to scam you too. |

Thank you for your suggestions. I have decided to stay in a hotel...but now the only problem is booking one! The hotels thread is helpful...but just by chance does anyone know if Hotel Megha Palace is okay?
