If your accommodations taken care off, then 40K would be more than enough for a upper middle class lifestyle...

You can feel very comfortable with that money.

rupee 40k is what - about $1000 US? A month? As shashank has said - you should be fine. Stay away from the 5 start hotel bars and you'll be ok...

How many people? Kids? Education? Are education costs if any part of the 40k? (Probably not, from the post)

Generally speaking, if you are looking for a western expat lifestyle, not enough.

An Indian upperish middle class lifestyle, as Shashank says, sure.

yes capt, it is for a single person and for a few months only so will not be running a vehicle but make my way on taxis. work related travel in the city is paid for by the employer. i am not looking for anything too flash though a few drinks at a good bar once in a while will be good. i guess what i dont want is to be scraping the bottom of the pan and from all posts it seems unlikely to be the case. thanks for your posts guys.
