Broadband options in Delhi
Dear All:
Moving to Delhi soon and will be taking my laptop with me there. I will be living very spartanly/simply for the first few months until my family joins me and we find our permanent residence. Thus, I may be moving around a couple of times the first several (5 or so) months I am in Delhi. Having some form of broadband is going to be essential for me (e.g. Skype, emails, internet etc). Given that I am going to be moving a couple of times, does it probably makes sense to go with mobile broadband? I'm not the kind of fellow that will be taking my laptop to coffee places etc. around Delhi; it's just that I am going to be moving within Delhi once or twice and I don't want to go through the (perceived) hassle of getting a "permanent" broadband account until we find our permanent residence. Now, a few questions: 1) My main question in this regard is how "good" is mobile broadband (i.e. is the service good throughout? What kind of speeds are we talking about?) Links to service providers giving details would be gratefully accepted. 2) How does one sign up for broadband? Can I join up from outside of India so that I can use the internet the day that I get there? 3) Do you need to have a permanent residence to open a broadband account? If so, would I be able to use my office/work address? 4) What are the monthly and one-time costs? 5) What kind of equipment do I need and where can I get it? 6) Since I won't really be running around Delhi with my laptop, should I just wait and get "permanent" broadband? If so, what kinds of permanent broadband delivery forms are there (e.g., phone-based, cable-based, satellite-based etc.) Folks, this forum is absolutely invaluable, and I really cannot get over how really helpful everyone is. Thank you! WW |

In mobile Bradband your choices would be
a. Reliance netconnect+ and tata indicom photon plus : On the CDMA platform b. BSNL 3G services : GSM 3G considering a 1. 2MBps is the advertised speed, while in the core city limits if you get 1/4 of the speeds you would be lucky (My opinion only) 2. You would just need to walk into any one of their sales centers / offices and apply. Many of the MNC have promotional offers for their employee (apply via the said representative) (or some companies would provide a company connection to their employees based on the job profile ) As you would need to give a address proof, etc I doubt it could all be done offline. TATA has a EShop www.ichoose.in 3. For mobile Internet Office address would work with the private telecoms. 4. For a CDMA USB modem you may need pay around INR3000 http://www.tataindicom.com/hsia-usb-...-personal.aspx http://www.rcom.co.in/Communications...t ml#Postpaid 5. USB modem for the CDMA one, However BSNL you would only need a 3G phone and connect to your laptop. 6. It may work as you you would have internet at office, You could always activate GPRS on you mobile connection (Slow speed_), Permanent broadband : ADSL 2+ from airtel or BSNL Hopefully you will get better and more local (delhi) information and suggestions from delhites in IndiaMike |

I just got Photon+ yesterday and they told me 3.1mbps... what a joke... this is slower than a modem connection back home in australia.. i would not recomend the wireless broadband here in Delhi!! I am waiting for airtel to put lines in my area (Shanti Kunj) so i can get ADSL at least!!! I cant download my movies!!!
The TaTa Photon+ Plus USB key modem costs RS 3500 + 100 connection and RS1100 per month post paid for 10GB.. I dont think this connection could download 10GB in a month! hahah I was told there was no 3G service here in delhi! dammit i would have gone for that! You do need address proof like your rental contract or something.. I had a hard time as I only had my passport and WA ID card |
