Apartment hunting in Delhi. HELP!!!
Hey everyone,
I moved to Delhi recently and will be here for a year. I'm having a lot of difficulty finding an apartment. Yuni-Net, DelhiNet, and Craigslist have all failed me. I think now it's time to go to a broker, but everyone, both expat and Indian, tells me to avoid them. Well, at this point I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any advice? Or do you have specific brokers that you have used and recommend (I already searched this forum and couldn't find any)? Thank you all so much! |

Videshi, I totally feel your pain. No advice here, just a shared grumble. I'm also apartment hunting in those areas right now. My budget is higher than yours -- 25-30,000/month -- and I cannot find anything for that amount in Def Col, Nizamuddin, or Hauz Khas.
I'm looking for a furnished place, mind you. I saw one lovely unfurnished place today, which needs a VERY thorough scrubbing, but would be great after someone with an eye for interior design got through with it. I am also looking for a "newer" or "modern" 1BR with dining room and kitchen (not just a 1BR -- I have seen some of those in Def Col; the kitchen was IN the bedroom, and the owner wanted 20,000 a month for it!). A broker (came recommended through a friend) looked around for me, and he could turn up NOTHING furnished for my budget. He said there has been a mad influx of expats since the beginning of September, if that helps explain things at all. Sigh. Anyway, I'd say for that budget, you should stick to unfurnished and furnish the place yourself. That might help, some. East of Kailash and Kailash Colony are also places you might look; they seem to be cheaper. |

Or you know what occurs to me? Videshi, maybe you and I could pool our resources and get a 3BR in Def Col - and because I'd be paying double, I could use the third bedroom as a study for myself. What say you?

Videshi: in those areas you're very unlikely to find anything halfway decent below 20-25000. Your 12000 is just unrealistic so you'd better team up with someone and share 1 apartment or consider another area.
About the expat influx: it's true that september is moving season with lots of new expats arriving (and others leaving) but this year it's actually been less than previous years, lots of companies re-focusing after the crunch and moving out is my impression. Besides, rents in south delhi and gurgaon are down all across the board compared to 1 year ago. |

Mod Note: Videshi - one of the reasons why you will not find recommended brokers is because many of them were members joining themselves just to advertise themselves. These sorts of threads are open to commercial activity, and for this reason we are not letting them run any longer. You have a few answers here already which can be a guide for you.
Another suggestion is to look at a Delhi Expat forum - do a google and you will find a website. Also take a read of any existing older threads re apartments in Delhi (if they are any around that is!) Because we have tightened up rules in regard to accommodation/flat shares this thread is now being closed.
