3 month stay in Delhi\Gurgaon
3 month stay in Delhi\Gurgaon
Hi,
I may have to move to Delhi from Ireland for 3 to 6 months for a work assignment.
My wife and 18 month old daughter would accompany me and we have a lot of questions about living in India
We have never been to India before and do not know what to expect.
My work would be based in Gurgaon and the company would be supplying us with an apartment but I am not sure where it would be located
What is Gurgaon like to live in?
Do the apartments have the same facilities as in Ireland e.g. air conditioning, running water, constant electricity, DSL etc?
What is health care like, if our daughter became sick are the clinics or hospitals up to the same standard as here in Europe.
Are there places my wife can bring our daughter during the day, playgrounds, swimming pools, etc.
What is the food like?, my wife and I love India food but we have not yet given any to our daughter as she may be a bit young for the spices. Are there places we can buy western style food to cook at home and are there may restaurants serving western style food ?
We have may more questions but I cannot think of them right now.
We would be very grateful with any information we receive, thank you

It's not my end of India, lots of other people will be along, but...
You have Air Conditioning in Ireland? Wow!
If you live somewhere incredibly posh, you may be able to drink the tap water, but you will have tap water, yes.
Electricity is not nearly as constant as one would like.
Western style food --- well, I have roast chicken once a week, mutton (ok, it's goat, not lamb) stew, too, and giant prawns fried in butter. It's not so much the food as the cooking method that makes it Indian or not: I'm able to keep my still-English stomach happy!

Browse through the forum, loads of Advice on the matter. General opinion is Delhi is better then Gurgaon to live in.

I am still not particularly fond of Gurgaon as a place to live. I have been traveling between Delhi and Gurgaon now for quite a while (office is in Gurgaon) and im not impressed.
While construction and developments has overtaken this part of North India, unfortunately infrastructure has not followed at the same pace - electricity problems, no public transport , a useless traffic police system etc. There are always the better/posher colonies where issues such as these might be less prevalent but those will be a minority.
As far as the apartment goes, you need to find out if its furnished or unfurnished. If its furnished then to what detail, a lot of the new construction happening here will give you what you want but your place might not be one of them. Most apartments owners i know pay a bomb to have electricity back up.
Quality of medical treatment will be lower than it is abroad, but this is not specific to Gurgaon.
Swimming pools , garden etc again depend on where u live finally. You can always opt for club memberships for the pool.
Food is one thing you will not have as problem with. The variety and choices are endless . There must be close to 20-30 malls in the gurgaon area housing numberous places to eat.

Gurgaon has many apartment complexes (gated communities) which have excellent apartments, electricity back-up, play areas etc. If your employer has not already found you a place ask them to look at places like The Palms, South City 1. A lot of expats live there and rent is reasonable (USD 900 per month for furnished 2 bedroom and USD1100 for furnished 3 bedroom). A few good child specilists are available in Galleria (a shop & office complex).
