What can't we get in Chennai... a few of your favorite things...
Our family is off to Chennai later this month, staying on for several months.
As we pack, I'd welcome any advice. I know we can buy most anything in Chennai, but I've read here and heard from others that there are certain, specific items that can be hard/impossible to find. Please, tell me what some of these things are. What *shouldn't* we leave home without????? |

I think will be impossible to answer this question in a useful way without more information from your side. Someone has to know what things you think you'll use/need before he or she can tell you whether or not you'll be able to find them in Chennai. I'm sure I could come up with a list of things that would be hard or even impossible to find in Chennai (dried cranberries, a copy of Witkin's Summary of California law, a road map of Delaware ...) and I've never even been there. But unless these are things you think are "necessities," what would be the point? You need to provide more info.

for example...
... foodstuffs...
... household items... ... personal grooming items... ... kids' things... I've heard that Chennai doesn't have the same availability of goods that Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, have. |

Still too general, I'm afraid. Obviously, "foodstuffs", "household items" and "personal grooming items" are available in Chennai, but what exactly are you talking about? Hamburger Helper? Lipton's Chicken Noodle Soup?? Parmesan cheese??? Pots and pans? Appliances?? Furnishings??? Shampoo? Deodorant?? Toothpaste??? Specific brands???? And "kids' things" ... what does this mean? It's pretty amorphous, don't you think? Are you talking about clothing? Toys? What? No one can give you a useful answer to a question that's framed this way.

Ihave never been to the other cities, but I was astonished by the stuff available in Hyderabad, in modern stores, just like London!
No, I don't think Chennai does have the same range of availablity. Bring marmite, worcester sauce, paprika. Bring your favourite shower stuff; it might be available here, it might not. I searched for mine for two years, and now, having just brought six bottles from London, I found it! Bring microfibre cleaning cloths, and a decent dishbrush

Amma Nanna has heaps of imported brands including marmite, worcester sauce and paprika. You just have to look hard for it on the shelves!

Also Nick, they get all sorts of different imported stock in almost everyday. So if you dont find what your looking for one day, if you go back the next or in a few days time, your sure to find it (by the way, the marmite and vegemite as i prefer, is found on the wall right at the back of the store- as if your standing directly in front of the shop looking in) Hope you find it!

Expect this stuff to be expensive though!
I have recoiled at the prices asked for a can of Heinz beans, or a packet of Wheetabix. Even those on expats salaries may find themselves seeking out cheaper local alternatives. Nuts'n'Spices is a good place to try too, although their price for plain chocolate digestive biscuits was too high for me ![]() |

He wants a Rabbi? My life!
I'd almost be surprised to find any of the worlds religions not represented here --- but I don't think we have a synagogue. Nearest one, probably: Kochi |

I searched everywhere for a dishbrush when I first came here. Had to get a friend in England to post me a couple! They are available now, though.

Maglites I have never seen in Ma India.
Of course, you could just get a cheap desi torch , about a dozen of them, for the price of one . . .
