I assume they use the ABRSM curriculum and exam system, which is excellent. How many teachers and students are at Musée Musical, and do they have a waiting list for enrollment? Certainly, one school cannot accommodate the needs of a city of over 4,000,000 people. And what about jazz and "pop"? My Chennai friend says there is a great need and increasing demand for music instruction. Guess I'll have to come see for myself!

Jazz doesnt draw too many big crowds in India. Small groups of varying calibre perform, though.

Both the Royal College of Music and Trinity college conduct exams in India.
so there are two curriculums (is that the right word?)

slightly off topic (in terms of location).....

our kids are continuing their piano lessons here in Delhi. We've managed to find a wonderful young Russian lady who trained at the the Moscow conservatory of music. So sitting in the office while piano lessons are underway - every once and a while the halting and stuttering procession of music will suddenly change, gather pace, and race away into flow of melody and music as the piano teacher takes over and demonstrates how it should be done.

what gets me is the speed and authority - it really is brilliant to listen too.

anyway - back to topic......

It doesn't seem to. When I was last in India I heard no jazz anywhere, but I'm sure there's an audience for it, if just a small one. That's the case here in the USA, frankly.

What about pianists in hotels? Not nessacarily jazz, but a mixture of different idioms such as jazz, classical, movie music and pop tunes. Surely there must be hotel piano in India...

Yep Jazz is very restricted. Delhi has a few bands which play occasionally , no where near enough, but i manage to catch a few every year.

Pianists in Hotels...i have not seen one in ages. A lot of the places where i did have now got someone with a keyboard who sings as well...but im sure they are around...

Many hotels have them. I know of at least a couple in Hyderabad, even though they don't get pianists to play regularly. In Chennai, the Park Sheraton used to have one.

Jazz is not completely absent, by the way. There are small bands which play in Mumbai. Here in Hyderabad there used to be a pretty popular one at a bar/resteraunt (at least with expats and fewer Indians)- my son used to play in it.

Small audiences, though.

There's a pianist occasionally in the Taj Coromandel in the lobby. A very friendly guy.

And there is a yearly jazzfestival in Bangalore around November. Not very busy, but good performers!
