Water filter/Aquaguard and other random questions...
Hi folks-so we've survived our first 2 weeks in Chennai from the luxury (ahem) of our serviced apartment. After the initial shock of the high rental properties, we finally found a place in Alwarpet which we will move into by 1st week of Oct. Which brings me to my next set of questions to all yee wonderful people...
1. Does one need a water filter installed at home? If so what brands, how much etc? 2. Any recommendations on where we can buy a mattress which, while comfortable, shouldn't be too expensive (we need it till our container arrives). 3. We'll be needing a TV, fridge and a washer. The high end stores seem muchos expensive...any suggestions on where we can buy the same stuff but cheaper? 4. Until I find cleaners, is there any agency I can contact to send cleaners over twice a week or so for a few hours? 5. I desparately will need a cook (who doesn't). Again, any agency I can contact... Thanks folks! R and N |

Welcome home! Alwarpet is increasingly fashionable, so I'm not surprised the rental may have come as a shock, but it is a very convenient and central place to live, and much of it is very pleasant too.
Water: You can buy it in 20Ltr cans for drinking. The stuff that comes out of your taps should be fine for washing. If you want the convenience of drinking water on tap, and also the security of knowing how it was processed, and when the machine was last serviced (you can't know this for sure with packaged water!) then get a Reverse-Osmosis water purifier. Ours in Zero-B, other makes are Kent, and, err... a few others. Mattresses... get a latex one. Do not buy any of the choir mattreses unless you are used to sleeping on concrete. Do not believe the guy in the shop when he tells you it'll get softer. Mine didn't before I finally gave up on it after two years. Also do not believe anyone who tells you they are hot; they allow air to circulate and are actually cool, as long as they are genuine latex. There's Foams India and, I think it is MM foams. Ours is Foams India; it had a horrible rubber smell for a couple of days, which then vanished. Electrics... well, I think they are expensive here, and not much can be done about that. Don't know what you're calling "high-end". There are the older chain stores, and new shops like e-Zone you can try. Can't say about staff... except, yes there are. Try to get hold of a local-area newspaper. |
