Want to rent on ECR - Chennai

We live on ECR in Kanathur. I think you already know your budget is not going to work here. The rents are ridiculous.

We have tried to get broadband for 8 months now. Solid pushing by various expatriates and Indians, big MNC behind it all. Powerful landlord. Nothing has worked. There is no broadband "hubs" or whatever past the tollgate, except for the Rajas dental college. Wireless cards (reliance and Airtel)work, but are slow. Our daughter uses a dial-up connection and it is often faster than my Airtel card.

Finally the MNC is getting us a business line, at a huge expense (because it's cheaper than moving us and internet is necessary for hubby's work).

So just be forwarned. Perhaps down by Mahallabalapuram it is different. We were told by the realtor that broadband would be no problem. Ha ha.

Hi SAHM,

We have found a place in Kanathur on ECR road, just after the toll gate in Chennai. We will be moving in there next week (27 Dec 2007) for a 4-months stay. I did not realise the broadband was going to be an issue. I need broadband for my work. Can you pl tell me which business line did you get, and how much did it cost? I am not sure whether I can organise it for four months access.

i am hoping to be in Chennai in the fall. I need to rent a place for 3 months for myself, my husband and 2 kids (6 & 4). Did you manage to find something that was not too expensive? Did you have to be 'on the ground' to get a decent deal, or did you find it from away? Did you have difficulty getting a short term rental?
