I'm a new member, looking for a place to rent on the ECR, even as far as and beyond Mahabalipuram. A small house near the beach, or a quiet flat with few neighbours is what I'm looking for.
Something inexpensive and on a yearly lease would be perfect. I will gladly housesit or farmsit. I have looked after a farm on Bannerghatta Rd in Bangalore between '98 and '2000. A telephone line with broadband possiblity is the only conditional requirement.. If somebody could recommend a good rental broker that would be great too. My budget is barely 6,000 INR so unless you want me to sit your farm or house, I can't afford the 2 lakh rentals.. Thx muchly!

Till somebody comes along with local information, check out
www.99acres.com www.indiaproperties.com keeping in mind folk tend to ask for too much on these kinds of sites. I would think, generally, that you will have to be much closer to Mahabalipuram than Chennai on the budget. Also, broadband, such as it is in India, may be a problem in those areas, but not sure. |

Thanks Capt_Mahajan!
Will check the links.. Been looking high and low for 2 weeks, not found anything so far.. Are you in Chennai..? Being so far out will be a hassle with transportation etc, but having missed the property bus in the city, I have to move far far away.. Thanks again! |

No, I am not in Chennai, and know that area only vaguely.
I may be wrong about ECR rents. Maybe a small apartment will be available at that price somwhere. |

There are a few houses for that price and many many flats, but none are what I need..mostly within Thiruvanmiyur and Velacheri..that's why I'm going so far out..
I do hope something comes along.. The thought of arriving in Chennai without a place to stay in gives me the shudders! ![]() |

Option: fix a budget hotel around the ECR when you arrive for a week or two, and look around. Will be easier, though a little more expensive initially.

Im surprised you managed to find anything along ECR for only INR6000! I agree with capt mahajan, the best thing to do is to come and stay in a hotel while you search for a place. I did this, and although I ended up satying in the hotel for 2 weeks, I did find a great place in the end. Most apartments etc go through agents, not through the net, so unless you are actually here, you will miss out on quite a lot of places.

I may end up doing just that.. Not looking fwd to it at all..
Any budget hotels to recco Capt? BTW, and if I may ask - are you from the armed forces? edit: sorry, missed your post MV. There's loadsa places at 6k in TVR and Velacheri (the only places I looked), but really, many, if not all are quite inhabitable. Some on CaptM's links too... Moreover, most landlords seem to think that advertising on the net without pics is sufficient.. Any hotels to recco MV? Last edited by Earthling : Oct 27th, 2007 at 12:49. Reason: details, spelling |

Yikes.
How do people survive in India these days? The India I grew up in was so slow, laidback and had an affordable economy all its own (not that it benefitted everybody but I do remember less gut wrenching poverty).. I just spoke with a friend who is on ECR. After I managed to calm him down from laughing so hard at my rental figure, he said he would ask around and let me know. Jokes aside, he seems to think it's very possible especially so far out. Thanks CM and MV, much appreciated. After I'm done and dusted you're welcome to come visit me in Mahabalipuram!!! ![]() |

i have rarely seen someone ask for a house at that rate in ECR :-) .....
U can definitely get one though ... Kalpakkam is one likely place ... since there is a atomic powerplant there , some housing establishments are available. Other options are closer to Chennai - Kottivakkam , Injambakkam and so on ... What about Old Mahabalipuram road aka IT Highway ? that runs parallel to ECR ... and provides some housing spots in and around Sholinganallur ... and Have a nice time in Chennai just remember The Chennai heat might be in start Contrast to the Bangalore climate .. |

![]() OMR is my last option, if I find nothing then I guess it will have to be OMR. I do hear some of the new developments on OMR are fantastic. If so, I doubt my budget will fit. I may have to look at Mayiladuthurai... Thanks Yuhoo! ![]() |
