THANK YOU so very much folks...I've found an agency (Elf) through IM which is willing to give me a gas cylinder without driving me nuts.

I am a bit late with this thread. There are 2 modes of getting gas cylinders. The subsidised and the unsubsidised.
For getting the subsudised gas connection you must first have proof of residence and proof of identity.
Proof of identity is easy,PAN card or bank passbook is OK.Proof of residency is the major problem. YOU MUST HAVE A RATION CARD FOR THIS

fOR THE NON SUBSIDISED ONE YOU CAN APPROACH ANY DELAER.mOST TECHIES GO IN FOR THIS

Late, but none-the-less welcome!

However, i think we have it all covered already and, most importantly, rbbm has got his gas

Yes, proof of residence is necessary for a subsidised connection, but, strictly, it is not necessary to have, specifically, a ration card. What is stipulated, however, and what is done, may very well vary and change from day to day!

Mental image adjusted

But hey, you didn't need the stereotyping there !

In this family, my wife is the cool and collected one; I supply the histrionics. I suspect we are very far from unique !

And however justified I am (and I like to think that is usually) my raving just makes extra work for her to calm the other guys down, on top of getting them to do the job. Actually, she's a genius at it --- probably she ought to run seminars on getting stuff done in Chennai

I am surprised the country does not invest more in a piped gas infrastructure to get rid of all these middle men, traffic congestion, corruption and safety issues. Surprisingly even top of the line apartment complexes that are being built are not doing much to offer piped gas within the buildings so that residents would not have to deal with the gas cylinder hassle.

Piped gas is available in a few places, including Delhi.

As for the corruption thing, I have had two official gas cylinders and a gas connection for thirty years. I have not paid (or been asked for) even one rupee as bribe. Ever. The cylinder comes home after a couple of days of a phone call.

Me two (although obviously for a fraction of the time of the Capt's experience).

Yes, there is corruption in the system*, with a big black-market trade going on, but it is not something that us end-users suffer: we get the cylinder, there is a printed bill, we pay the amount on the bill. That's it. I think that a lot of non-residents are trying to make out that there is more to it than there is; I do not understand why people persist in posting the problems they imagine, when they are not even customers here.

*and not only in the system. One is allowed to order a refill every twenty days. Consumers whose cylinders last longer than this (especially if they have managed to acquire extra cylinders, which is easily done through marriage, etc, let alone illegal methods) can easily order every twenty days, and pass on a cylinder at a premium.

on the piped gas thing? Pretty much all buildings with Piped gas are supplied from a bank of the normal subsidised cylinders located in the building itself....

Setting up a Piped gas network similar to piped water supply will be a night mare.... and after the recent (in the last decade) laying of cabling for broadband connectivity im sure no one wants any more of those....

They've done it in Delhi, and plans to do it in Chennai have been spoken of.

For an example of the corrupt side of the gas suppply trade, take a look at the second photo in this Team-BHP thread on safety in India. The red cylinders are subsidized domestic supply cylinders.
