i have absolutely no idea how the market works or dont
Nor Brishti do I!

What I was saying is that you should buy your gas freely. If you need it very quickly - you order from the prompt supplier, who may charge a little more.
If you are not in a hurry - you order from the slow, but cheaper supplier.
But both suppliers should be equally accessible to everyone. That's a free market (assuming some corrupt wholesaler doesn't interpose himself to illegally manipulate the supplies to favour retailers who use him).
Of course if there is no effective supervision (Police; Gas Regulator, or other enforcement agency) or if they are lax - ................????

I will say this only seventeen times

You can buy your gas freely from any private connection supplier in your area. There is more than one.

There is only restriction on subsidised supplies --- and even then, there will be more than one supplier for a busy metro area.

Your free-market argument is out of place here, because you are arguing for something that exists already.

Of course, given all that, corruption in going to exist in the system, because it is endemic here. Entire shipments of rice get siphoned out of the ration-shop system for private sale.

Thank you, lovely people, for your invaluable input. The story and deets so far:
Since our home is going to be in Mylapore, I looked up some agency and randomly came across the below:
Sree Karpagambal Gas Agency near Kabaleshwarar Temple. So I go there, show them my rental agreement and passport and I think this ain't so bad. Then the ladies there tell me that Indane will send a resgistered letter to my apartment to make sure I live there and then a person to verify. That's when I had a cow (not literally)! All I want is a flipping gas cylinder in a legit way and I'm supposed to miss work for God-knows how long so that some random letter can be delivered to me and then some random man can verify my address??! I told them I don't need a subsidized connection but they just stared at me with a blank look.
I'm moving to my apartment tomorrow-and I'll go duke this out again. Otherwise...sigh....otherwise nothing.

Thanks again folks. More when I'm situated in Mylapore.

You could try the place I mentioned, which is Bharatgas. They never did that stuff with me, but that was over four years ago.

It's not so bad, you know: if this was UK, you'd probably ave to be at home for a week!

i dont understand what non-subsidised means either - and it has nada to do with intelligence.
the appropriate terminology for india would be 'private' or 'government' gas agencies.

have you considered applying for a cylinder from a private agency rbbm?

Aren't there dealers of Elf Gas or Jyoti Gas in your area? They are private suppliers as well and as far as I recollect, they don't separately verify your address, that happens by default when the cylinder is delivered.

Nick, another advantage of the government gas connection is, I think, that it can be used as valid address proof while applying for other stuff like a broadband connection, landline etc.

On an OT, I hear these days the Indian Postal Service also offers the facility of giving you an acceptable address proof.

My BSNL bill has always been my address-proof mainstay. I suspect I used it to get the gas connection.

No, even government agencies give two types of connections - the "subsidized" ones for people who can provide a valid ration card, and the "non-subsidized" one for those who want a cylinder but don't have a ration card.

EDIT: but, in the context of the message, Brishti is right.... you should ask for a "private" gas supplier in case you want to do it more easily.

Bloody Hell!!

So much bul*%i*.

Cut it all loose - you have money; you want gas - here it is!! That's a free market!

Buggered if it sounds like it to me! Sounds to me like a regular horde of people are making a living off a simple transaction - which could; and should be much easier to organise - and much cheaper to pay for!

As you might not have gleaned from the multiple postings here, that's EXACTLY how it works with the private gas agencies here. You go in, shell out cash, fill in a form and get a gas connection.

PS: In many new apartment complexes nowadays, and some cities, there's piped gas, so you don't need to apply for a connection separately.

Obione... have you lived in India? I just get the feeling that you have no idea what you are talking about on this one

Never mind what it sounds like to you! Have you taken into account, for a start, that a gas cylinder, in Indian terms, is quite a valuable thing, hence deposits, address check, etc. Its value can become even more once it enters the black market.

Making money? Err... yes... that is what happens in your free market, isn't it? Isn't that what it is all about?

We've already told you that subsidised connections get a substantial discount, which is government, tax-payer, subsidised. If there is any bullshit in the system, it is that that is, in effect, not restricted to those who most need it.

Our diesel is subsidised too.

India is constituted as a "SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC". You may not like the word "socialist" in there, but it is there! And, unlike sad "New" Labour in UK, there is still some vestige of its reality

But hey, never mind the political disagreement --- that achieving some seemingly simple simple tasks turns out to be astonishingly difficult... just seems to be part of life here!

The worst part is rich people driving cars with the subsidized LPG. So many people do it.

Purely private gas, no questions asked

I'll write this again--this place will give u a gas cylinder (delivered the next day) as long as u walk in and pay cash. No ID, no nothing. Refill back in Jan. was 275 or 375--I would have to go look thru my receipts.

044-24451659. It costs about 2,200 Rs (part of which is a deposit you will not get back). In Thiruvanmiyur.
