tamil, hindi, apartments...
Hi,
I apologize in advance if I didn't search the forum well-enough to find the answers to these questions already posted. Can anyone pass along recommendations for either Hindi or Tamil teachers? (I'm looking for someone generally in central Chennai - Boat Club, Nungambakkam, Egmore, Alwarpet, etc. I've had Hindi instruction before - can read and write, but have limited vocabulary. I know a little bit of Tamil, but not much.) And what post would be complete without a question about housing? Does anyone have any recommendations for a broker for short-term 3-12 months furnished housing - in the same areas as above. Cheers, Karen |

If you are in the renting-in-Boat-Club league, then go to one of the big firms like Hannu Ready. You can find their number on many no-parking signs attached to people's gates, or probably in Saturday's The Hindu Property section. See the ads therein too.
There were some IMers got together for Tamil lessons, and there was a thread about it. I don't know if they are still going. |

No, I'm definitely not in the renting-in-Boat Club league :-)
but I'm staying in the area temporarily. I'm looking for something more low-rent (30-40k), but central (Nungambakkam, Alwarpet, Egmore). My office is on Greams Road. Any recommendations for lower-end brokers appreciated! Thanks. |

South Chennai
Hi Karen,
If you don't mind negotiating some traffic and travelling for 30 to 45 mts,you can get nice 2 bedroom apartments in Vadapalani,Saligramam sub-urbs at a lesser rate It takes around 30 to 45 mts to reach greams road from Vadapalani area. The rent will be cheap 15k to 20k. I am not sure whether they will be furnished. They do have wardrobes, wood works etc,,but not refrigerators, kitchen utensils,dish-washer,washing machine..as available in American furnished apartments. Sriram.B |

Hi Karen,
I can recommend a Tamil teacher. Just PM me and I will give his number. If he is too busy to take up other classes, he can recommend other teachers. For Hindi there is the dakshina hindi prachar sabha in T. Nagar who gives regular classes. And yes, Nick, we are still taking Tamil class. With a bit of interruption when one of us is away, but we keep going. I still like it, even though it is really difficult. Have given up the idea of ever becoming fluent!! |
