Awesome Stacey! PM is a private message, which would not be seen by other people. I think you have to be a member for a certain number of days to be able to send and receive them.
Same for me abt planning to stay longterm, so I really want to give it a serious shot. I live in T. Nagar, would be easy if you live close by... I will also ask around if people know a good teacher. Last edited by mirjamd : Jan 31st, 2008 at 19:12. |

PM... Private Messageing.
Its part of a whole new world of credit cards, special-rate loans and time share deals that suddenly opens up to you when you reach a certain number of posts/number of days membership. ![]()

Does anyone know how long you have to be registered on this site to do the messaging thing then?
I think that will be the thing to do Mirjamd. Once i can do the messaging thing we can arrange to meet up. Im not too far from you. |

I should, but I never remember, and Nadreg tweaks these setting to keep people on their toes.
It is protective measure, particularly for our female members. New members were getting jumped on by male lurkers, and existing members were getting jumped on by new men ---- errr, as in new male members, actual new men probably wouldn't be sending such messages! Whilst it can be a nuisance to new members, it has considerably cut down on the abuse of the system that was happening before. I'll now repeat that in Tamil... Oh. No I won't --- my wife has gone out! ![]() I'm afraid I am a useless language student, but Mrs N hasn't given up entirely; she still tries. |

Class of 3?
Before you ladies go off to learn Tamil and PM each other, PLEASE count me in. I've tried phrase books and learn in 30 days, but I too need the discipline of someone checking my work
I'm in Adyar but can get to T Nagar or Nogam or I can host. I was about to start watching Tamil cartoons. It's working for my 4 year old 'nephew' |

Tamil teacher
Dr. Dasaranthan teaches Tamil at the American International School. He teaches group classes for parents of students there, and also teaches private lessons. I have been taking it for a few months and his teaching is excellent. Call the American International School and they can give you his number - sorry I don't have it on me at the moment.

Tamil lessons
Sorry I don't have good internet yet (one year and waiting!!
), so I don't get to check indiamike very often.I take lessons twice a week, two hours total. That's what works for me. When I learned Japanese, it was an immersion program - 8 hours a day for 8 weeks; then on to the country, where I lived with Japanese people and had no option to speak English. Of course, you learn faster when you study and practice more. Personally, I'd take whatever amount of lessons that fits in your schedule and doesn't overwhelm you. The great thing is that you can practice everywhere. I believe that Dr. D's goal is to do 15 lessons and give you a good grounding in verbal Tamil, but when I started, he just asked me what my goals were and we went from there. I intend to take it for at least a year. It is helping; I'm getting much more of a feel for what my staff are saying, although I'm nowhere near fluent (OK I'm not even good at complete sentences. At any rate, Dr. D has a lesson plan, a logical way of presenting it, precise English, and teaching experience, all of which add up to success. When and where did you eventually decide to meet? Were you able to get ahold of Dr. Dasaranthi? SAHM |

I talked with Dr. Dasarathan (Tamil teacher) today about posting his number on this site, and he said yes. It is 9444169603. I told him that there was a group of people interested in studying, and he was pleased, but is only available evenings and weekends. His day job is at the Central Polytchnic Campus (close to Tidel Park) at the International Institute for Tamil Studies. He mentioned that there were 3-4 other Tamil teachers there who might want extra work also.
Good luck, SAHM |

So my apartment is very near to Tidel Park, in Adyar by IIT. I would be happy to host the classes there. I'm usually home by 8pm.
