T Nagar has some very nice old-fashioned residential areas, with nice houses. It is also a shopping mecca, and traffic in the area can be quite awful.
Supermarket? try Ranganathan Street if you want to be truly scared by T Nagar shopping! It's an experience . Think Oxford-Street-on-the-Saturday-before-Christmas, then compress what you see into a really tiny road! The supermarkets, such as Spencers, Nilgiris, More, (New ones seem to blossom every day) are quite sane and easy ways to shop in Chennai. You can get your milk there, although fish and meat are probably best bought from meat shops and fish markets, which is getting rather more adventurous. Most small general shops also sell pasteurised milk in 0.5lt packs. It is priced accordingly from low-fat through to full-cream.Welcome to Chennai! |

I also recommend GRT for a swimming pool. It is very clean. Membership is Rs. 2000 for the swimming pool, around another Rs. 2000 for the gym. You can get milk in packets delivered to your door. Ask your neighbours for who is the paalamma (milklady) in your neighbourhood. you will have to boil this milk first though. Another option is buying milk in cartons from the supermarket (Nilgiri's, More, Spencer's etc.), which doesn't need boiling. You can buy chicken from the supermarket, but don't know about quality, because I am veg... There is a good yoga school in Vani Mahal on GN Chetty Road. One of our relatives works there, so PM me if you want contact details. Apollo is a good hospital, which is not too far from T. Nagar. Others a bit further out are Sri Ramachandran and MIOT. Can't help you with the Ayurvedic doctor though... I hope this helped. Let us know if you ended up moving to T. Nagar. |

...I don't boil the packet milk; it is pasteurised. My wife does, though --- and she has live here 45 years longer than I have! Thing is, I am never sure that it is not a throwback to the days when milk delivered to the house cam from a local cow and was not treated. It is still an option, by-the-way, in many places, to buy untreated milk: I wouldn't like to risk it!
I don't think I could quite bring myself to go around asking for the local milk mother . We have a paalappa, anyway --- but, as I've never heard my wife call him anything but 'the milk man' I've learnt a word. Thanks Mirjam! |

We don't buy meat in our neighborhood grocery store (Nilgiri's) because it is so expensive--instead we go to "Fresh and Frozen" in Spencer Plaza. It's located on the second floor behind the Sri Lankan trade area--a little tough to find the first time. They will deliver, so that might do the trick for you. We usually get chicken but they also have sausages, pork (I think, not sure) and a variety of seafood. The quality of the chicken we've had is excellent. I think everything there is frozen--not sure where the "fresh" in the name comes from!

We send our maid to the local butcher.
I saw him feeding his goats this morning on the plot next to our house. I guess I'll be eating one of them next week .I wish my body was able to take to vegetarianism! |

Fresh and Frozen
Just an addendum to my post of yesterday regarding Fresh and Frozen. I was wrong about the floor--it's on the first floor behind/near the Sri Lankan Trade place. I went yesterday so here is the exact address: F-202, 1st Floor, Third Phase, Spencer Plaza. They do carry pork for those who care. Boneless chicken breast is around 250 rupees per kg.
If anyone cares! ![]() |
