Long-termers really have to risk the mosquitoes. Just make sure that you get tested if you have anything that could remotely be malaria. Last time I was given anti-malarial drugs as a just-in-case, but taking them made me feel dreadful! The prophylactic dose never had any side effects on me. ANyway, it was the right thing to do. I get bitten most days.
Odomos is a local brand? I can be pretty disciplined about putting on repellent (sp?) if I have to...

Someone wrote not to bring terry cloth towels as they don't dry well. Everyone agree? This was a problem in the Philippines, too, where I lived for many years.

Sev'l people suggested good kitchen knives, but now I'm afraid they'll be xrayed and taken away upon arrival. What to do?

Thanks for the link to buy appliances.

Bata sells good flip flops for less than 200/-.

Yes ,in the monsoon you can be walking in the road with effluent up to thigh level, it may be called a mixture of what the road drains cant clear away, mixed with what comes up from the underground sewers. FOUL. When you get home just give you legs a good wash.
Skin is a good defence.

If you have any abrasions on your skin, I suggest tetracyclene cream, readily available, after the monsoon wading, as a precaution.

100 grams? You are looking at a hard core drinker! I remember good S. Indian coffee in Kerala, but couldn't recall drinking it in T.N. I will stock up on filters for my Melitta style cone and bring a Bodum travel mug (French press).

Mesh metal sink strainers

Can I get these to put in the sink drains? Do I need big or little ones?

Yes, Odomos is a local brand; about 12% DEET.

Yes, bring a couple of good kitchen knives. I'm sure I've brought them on the plane, just not in the hand baggage!

Towels dry fine in the hot sun. There are two or three weeks a year when everything is soggy, but the rest of the year is fine for drying anything. Towels of all sorts, of course, available here.

Bring a packet of blutack and a roll of gaffer tape. Bring a leatherman or similar multi-tool (but not in carry-on!). Bring some polystyrene or nylon line for clothesline; the polypropylene stuff here falls apart in a month or two. Bring a pack or two of microfibre cloths... ...

Ho, now that's weird... I must have been just thinking of that as you posted!

That's because I bought a plastic one last year in UK that turned out to be too small for our sink.

They come in different sizes, the sink plugs, so I can't really advise. Bring a variety!

If you have lived in the tropics before, you can probably transfer a lot of the same experiences.

I can't get my heavy terrycloth US-made towels to dry completely; they smell like mildew, and then have to be bleached. If I put them in the sun, the ever-present crows take a leak on them. So I've given up on them. The waffle-weave European ones dry just fine, as well as the thin Indian ones.

I just bought a sink strainer from Europe that fits our kitchen sink just fine. I don't know if you can buy them here or not, as my patience for shopping in the heat has evaporated.

I'm sure knives will make it through in checked baggage; it's the hand baggage that they X-ray coming off the plane.
