Hi all,

I am trying to figure out the procedures for clearing a dog imported to Chennai unaccompanied. My medium-sized dog is being shipped from Kenya, and I have an agent over there taking care of all the procedures. However she can only help me up to putting my dog on the plane, and I've heard the processes for clearing an unaccompanied dog are much more difficult than clearing a dog shipped as baggage with a passenger. I've looked on all the other pet-related forums on indiamike but haven't found the info I need, so hoping someone out there has gone through this process and can help me out.

The quarantine officer in Chennai tells me I need to obtain a "no-objection certificate" from his office in order to clear the dog at customs, but won't tell me exactly which forms I need to bring or what the costs will be, and I can't find much official documentation of this certificate from my research. I'd like to minimize the bribes I have to pay and hoops I have to jump through to get this done. I also heard I might have to pay for a taxi to get the quarantine officer to the airport to clear the dog, but this just seems ridiculous. I looked into hiring a professional agent to help me through this process, but their rates are unaffordable.

Anyone who has experience with this and could help me out, would be much appreciated! Also to address some notes I've seen about the perils of bringing a pet dog to India, in this case I am bringing my dog here because her life here with me will be infinitely better than her current life in Kenya, where there is no one to take care of her and she is severely malnourished. I wasn't allowed to take her with me when I was forcably evacuated from my home there 6 months ago, so now I am trying to get her back.

Why didn't he give you the details of the forms? did he give some reasoning?

doesn't a customs quarantine officer sit in customs office at airport? where did you meet him?

Bottomline is he is trying to con you. I would suggest call up the airlines local office and get the details from them for custom clearance. a simple threat of complaining to higher official will do wonders. (but keep that as alast resort) try to get details about forms from him.

meanwhile i have also asked my friend to enquire from his friend working in customs. i'll let you know once details are available.

no perils as i would put it for dogs in india. YOu have tobe careful about not letting dog off leash while walking and being in control of your dog especially if the dog is hyperactive, as there are many street dogs. They can pose problem of infective skin diseases if they come in contact, but till you keep a check on your dog no need to worry about. If you are carefuil about that part there shouldn't be a problem.

There are goodd vets in chennai for any other issue to be taken care off. I own two labradors. until now i haven't got any problems. (though iam indian and dogs have not been imported) but until unless you are bringing a breed like st bernard, siberian huskies etc (i.e dogs of cold resions) it shouldn't be problem.

Hi Lucky, thanks for your reply. I would be very interested in hearing what your friend's friend who works in customs has to say about the procedure, as that seems to be the best way to get information!

The info I received was from a combination of the quarantine officer and an agent who specializes in clearing pets at customs (but charges a fee that is far out of my price range in order to do it). The agent is reliable (trustworthy referral) and said sometimes the quarantine officer will make you pay for a taxi. The quarantine office is in Pallikaranai, near the airport but not inside it. He said I have to go to the office in advance with "forms", although he kept changing his mind about which forms I needed, so I'm pretty sure he'll give me a different answer if I go down there (and it's an hour out of town to get there). That's why I'd like to find out from a different source what the procedure is.

Also thanks for the link, have seen that before and it's helpful, but only for importing dogs as excess baggage when you're a passenger on a plane - it seems that the procedure for unaccompanied animals is different.

So would definitely appreciate advice from the friend who works in customs!!

Hi,

I am very happy to read that you are taking care of this poor dog despite all the difficulties.

I can not be of much help but perhaps a few ideas.

It seems that Indian Airlines has most experience with transporting animals. Perhaps you want to contact their office in Chennai to see how they can help. You have to ask for the cargo manager. I dealt with them in Bangalore and found them very helpful.

Secondly, you may want to contact the Blue Cross in Chennai (http://www.bluecross.org.in). The Blue Cross is a very succesful shelter run profesionally with lots of connections. There is a good chance they have been involved in transporting animals, know the airport officials and thus might be able to help you further.

Good luck and let us know how things go.

Thanks again.
