Returning to Chennai after 11 years.
I was born and raised in Chennai and I left Chennai 11 yeas ago to USA and now I am planning to return to Chennai. Why did we plan to return? When I left Chennai I was a bachelor and I liked to travel now I have 2 kids age 4 and 10 months and every time we visit India my daughter is so excited because she can play with her nieces and nephew, all of our immediate family are in India we don’t have any immediate family in USA we have many friends American and Indian’s in USA but that is not as same as having family around, so finally we decided to move back to India. We will be moving in June / July 2008, so that my daughter can start 1st grade.
Housing Price: I am shocked to see the real-estate prices in Chennai, it has always been my dream to own a house in Chennai, but some dreams never come true, I have to go back to renting. Hopefully when I retire I will have enough money to build a house far away from the city. Job: I have to start my job searching process in Chennai, it has been more than 11 years since I have attended an interview, If anyone has any contacts in IT companies please send me a PM. I am looking for a job in IT Management. I always read all the threads posted in Chennai forum, even though I grew up in Chennai, thinking about the Chennai traffic scares me and Chennai has changed a lot since I left.

estate so high???? A fresh graduate starting into an IT company these days can easily book a house on loan schemes form varios banks in 2/3 years of job. Now of course the builders and banks have turned into sharks these days....again because of IT, but its very much possible. At least in Pune where the rates have rocketed in the last couple of years. Almost all of my friends in Pune own a flat now. aah...yes I am talking about flats and not bunglows if you are thinking at this level. Rowhouses in Pune start from 40-50lacs. Chennai even if more expensive than Pune, it cannot be as expensive as Mumbai for sure.
Kids must be happy to start a new life...a real life with lotsa friends around .11 yrs in IT Management....whoa! You will be home picked by some consultants. Am sure you must have already done this but still putting it here...create your profile on naukri.com and monsterindia.com and you will be bored of attending calls from consultants ![]()

Oh, ISN, if only you had bought your Chennai house three years ago! But hey, that applies to too many of us.
I'm afraid you'll be shocked at the rentals too. I've heard some people paying double what they paid one to two years ago --- they lagged behind, and never seemed to me to represent much of a return on capital a few years ago, now with the rocketing land price, they just have to catch up. If its any consolation, I heard from a friend two weeks ago, that people are still asking the same prices for sale, but buyers are thin on the ground. So, welcome back --- to what was your home long before I even discovered it. Its changed a heap in eleven years, but then you know that as you visit regularly. I guess I must have first come here the year you went to USA!

Thanks Nick, I left Chennai on September 1996, spent a few months in Germany and then moved to USA, I have made a few trips to Chennai buy every time I make a visit I find things changing quickly and I find people are willing to spend more money to get what they want.

I first came here in '97. I don't think I even saw an internet cafe, I certainly didn't notice any computer harware shops ---and now I can see multi-storey development companies from the terrace of my house.

ISN, it's nice to hear this.
I like Chennai. My first time to India, about 6 years ago, we went to Chennai for one week, then to Puri for one week, then back to Chennai for another week. We were glad to be back in Chennai. For me, coming from a place where there's a million+ Tamils, and most of my friends, Chennai is a comfortable place. We stayed in Kasturibhainagar, Adyar. Where I couldn't afford to buy property, I know. |
