Relocating to Chennai in May 2009

Hi Friends,

I need a furnished apartment close to Tidel Park by the second week of May. I will be relocating for two years and I have a budget of approx Rs 9000 pm for rent. I would prefer a 1 BHK of 1000 sqft and I also need a car parking facility. I also need clean water ( not the salty Type for bath), AC, Internet, cable / dish TV.

1. What are my chances of finding such a place close to Tidel Park?
2. What are the safe places withing 20 min of car driving distance to Tidel Park that I should look into?
3. Is it better to employ someone to cook or is it better to dine in a hotel? Is there a system where the food id delivered at home?

I did read the other posts in the forums but since I have no idea of the geography/ layout of chennai vis a vis distance and time to reach a place and that is why I decided to post. While google shows the distance from Airport to Tidel Park as approx 8 Km..the taxi guys in the airport charged my friend Rs 450 during his last trip.

Thanks

Move to Chennai

Hi ,

Airport pick up / drop are standard rates. Pvt cab companies like Akbar travels / Aviation express who have their counters outside the arrival lounge are slightly costlier but mostly they have air condtioned cabs.

You can check out the tamil nadu tourism taxis which are the black ambasador cabs ( non ac ) which would be cheaper by 50 or 100 Rs.You can decide which to take, but I suggest u take the AC cab.

Reg apt, getting a furnished apt for 9000 is a tall deal more so when you want air conditioner etc. You might take a unfurnished apt and then furnish it depending on your needs as you are going to stay for two years.

Chek out www.99acres.com to see the apt availability. and also hindu satruday property plus classifieds.

Engaging a cook might cost you 2000 to 3000. There are home delivery carrier food available in most parts of Tiruvanmiyur ( north indian as well as south indian and i think that would be a better bet for you. Check out the adayar times/mylapore times for the little classifieds. I shall also check if i am able to get some contact for you and post it here. You may also call up Just Dial services 26444444 who can give you some leads of home delivery food.

Best wishes, Raghu

Yep, I am afraid that 9,000 is nothing in Chennai these days, for a nice place.

There are plenty of places within 20 minutes drive --- although you may find that 18 of those minutes are spent trying to get through Thiruvanmiyur junctione! Google Maps, MapMyIndia and Google Earth will help you find your locations easily.

Beware of OMR locations to the South; in places like Perungudi. you might have a lot of trouble with basic utilities --- like sewage, let alone water! These areas are suffering from having grown too fast! Likewise, although parts of Velacherry are very nice and posh, it has a lot of problems with flooding.

There are areas like mine, the un-posh side of Palavakkam (canal-, rather than sea-side. The sea smells better than the canal!) which could be very convenient for you, and might come within your budget --- but bear in mind that even people living alongside the canal, with its permanent stench and propensity to fill their houses with its stinking effluent at least once a year, are being asked to pay two or three thousand for tiny houses these days

Afterthought:

You could a nice place in Indira Nagar and walk to work --- spend more on house, less on transport. Also Tidel Park is well-served by the MRTS line.

Thanks guys for the response.

What is OMR location?

So the areas close to Tide park without he salty water are Indira Nagar, Velanchery, Thiruvanmayur. What about Besant Nagar? Is it close?.

What is the approx price for buying a 1000sq ft flat in close proximity of Tidel Park. Loan will not be an issue. Is there any change in real estate prices? I was hoping that the prices in chennai would have come down.

Tidel Park and Surroundings

Yeah, you can consider Beasant nagar also to be close though it is not linked by MRTS. You can drive down to work in 15 minutes. Indira Nagar is the closest and as Nick pointed out, accessible by MRTS too just a station away from Tidel and you can even walk.

OMR is nothing but Old Mahabalipuram Road which houses all the IT and ITES Companies. sinc the ECR ( East Coast road ) has come up, the old road to mahabalipuram has been christened.

Water, if it is from a house's own bore well, can vary from house to house in the same street!

OMR: Old Mahabalipuram Road. Also know as Information SuperHighway, and now officially names Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Sorry: I forget that non-Chennai-ites don't know the abbreviations that we habitually use

For distances: Please see online maps.

Indira Nagar and Besant Nagar (nearby) are upmarket areas, which will be reflected in the prices.

Hi you may try locations around Indira Nagar if your are looking for posh accomadation ( A single BHK for around 500 Sq ft)or you may prefer Perungudi as that is a highly mallu populated area.

Anyway, All the best in chennai which is comparatively better than Delhi.

Adyar and Besant Nagar are all 6-7 minutes from Tidel Park by car. They have quiet, shaded streets and now Adyar has a Naturals Ice Cream store across from the Telephone exchange on LB Rd. The north end of Thiruvanmiyar also has some newer apt. buildings and is just as close.

The area right next to Tidel Park is Tamarani, and densely packed w/few trees and very narrow roads. You could bicycle to work, though, in about 4 minutes.

Velachery--There are some newer apt. buildings built on the 100 ft. bypass road (which has some good restaurants, including the Ratna Cafe for veg thali) and Velachery Main Road. The drive along Tamarani road (From Vel. to Tidel Park) is only a few minutes and there a few restaurants and many clothing shops, Domino's and a Baskin Robbins.

I'm in B.N. and I work in Velachery and I'm glad I did not rent in Velechary. It's dusty with way too much traffic.

If your friend took an Ambassador taxi (set fare--no AC) from the airport, s/he should have paid 250 Rs. An aircon taxi from Besant Nagar to the airport is only 250 Rs.!(April 09).
