Just wanted to say ta for the help on furniture stuff. I managed to buy some things from Royapettah (?sp), and the Eichers street map advice was invaluable - thanks Nick-H, its now my bible.

I am really enjoying Chennai, the weather at the moment is gorgeous and the whole city seems quite relaxed and friendly - well, except maybe for Pondy bazaar!

When does it start to heat up? I can't believe this is midwinter! And how hot does it get? I know the answers to this are going to be scary...

Cheers,
G

Hey Gertie

You are lucky as this month till now seems to be quite pleasant otherwise you can expect sub 30 degrees in Jan.I doubt if it will continue for more weeks. February will be more hotter and march opphh!!
You can expect increase in temperature after 14-15 Jan, as sun started moving northward. Hindu people in India celebrate this festival as makar Sakranthi (http://www.hindujagruti.org/makar-sankranti/) or Pongal in Tamilnadu.

One more thing, why didn't you enjoy shopping in Pondy Bajar, its a cool street shopping area, where you can find very chap items. But you have to bargain.

Hey sb,

Thanks for reply. Don't get me wrong, I loved Pondy bazaar, I just meant it wasn't relaxed! I went for the first time today and it was so busy compared to other parts of Chennai, but I like the buzz and energy it has.

Ta for info about weather. May is the hottest month, right? Not sure how I'm going to cope.

Gertie, glad to hear you're happy; not everyone takes to Chennai.

Hello there

I have also just arrived in Chennai - and am also enjoying the curret weather and buzz of the city (not to mention the fantastic food- mmmmmm), while trying to get settled into the new job.

It was good to hear of things going on earlier in the month - now that the music festival is over is there somewhere I can find out about what's on around the city?

Cheers and thanks

The music 'festival' may be over, but music is never over in Chennai. Check out The Hindu every day for the listings.

Uh oh.. that sounds quite intimidating. I am arriving in about 15 days. I should be prepared to be melting. I don't know how I would adjust to the temperature. It's freezing here, i.e., Korea.

Having said that, I heard someone whose Nickname starts with N..said it's not really, or really really hot.

Whose information should I rely on?

Did I say that?

Well, compared to the deserts of Rajastan, it isn't really, really hot here.

But it is hot. Winter is over, and there is a noticeable, ummm... heat in the air. 31 at my desk today; first time over 30 for a couple of months. My little box also reads 56% humidity, and it is that that tends to make people uncomfortable here rather than just the temperature.

Welcome Cool Blue to Chennai,

I have seen in last 4 years, this year-first time in Chennai, temp used to be less than 30 in almost whole January, otherwise average normal is 30-32.

Expect to get some more heat out of sun for Chennai in next couple of days. Nick you are right today it was 31.

But almost every house has Aircon here, so except going out to beach in hot afternoon you can do every other thing. Also evening used to be quite breezy and pleasant even in April-May.

Thanks for all the welcoming and helpful messages.

Weather for me is great - my last job was in Mongolia and I travelled from minus 30 to plus 30 in one day!! So I am basking in this climate now, enjoying it before it starts to really heat up.

Thanks

60 degree change in a day!

Wow!

Take it easy! Your body has a lot of adjusting to do.
