Moving to Mandavelipakkam
Hi everyone,
I am from Malaysia. I been posted here to manage the company here.Should be staying here for a year or so. I reach Chennai on begining of March. Have been staying at Mylapore for the past one month in a service apartment near the Kapaleeswarar Temple. However, now I am moving to a two room apartment in 3rd Trust Cross Street, Mandavelipakkam this weekend. Hope you can help me in the following; 1. Nearby non-veg restaurant 2. Safety of the area? 3. TV channel available? Should I install a dish for myself? 4. Maid charges for cleaning the apartment and washing clothes only? 5. Nightlife in the area. Thanks |

Hi VJ,
Mylapore is a place mostly full of Vegetarians. You would not find too many non veg restaurants. However since you wd be staying on 3rd Trst cross street, you can just walk over to Santhome High Road ( Beach Road ) via 5th Trust Cross street and take a left at Santhome High Road and you can see a neat non veg restaurant. I forgot the name, but it seems good. You dont have to buy a separate dish as you would staying only for a year. You can ask the neighbours in the apartment to give you the contact details of the cable operator and you can get the connection instantly ( within a day ) The area is very safe, closely populated. Not sure why you should be worried as you are a Single Man. Reg the maid also you can ask your neighbours to refer. You can pay her about 700 to 800 Rs per month for cleaning and washing. Night Life - absolutely NIL. Mandeveli / Mylapore is a place of temples. Its like a place similar to Leboh Ampang in Kuala Lumpur. It depends on what kind of night life yu are looking at. There are no dance bars any where in Chennai for that matter. If you want to booze you would need to go to pubs. Cheers ! Raghu Quote:

Night life: classical music... lots!
You say you are currently near Kapali temple? Mandaveli is not far away: take a walk there and discover everything you need ![]() Nice place to live. ... unless you want nightlife! ![]() |

Thanks Raghu....
Ya, I realise that this place is hopeless for nightlife. I am spending most of my nights in Time bar and 10 Drowning Street so far. Most of the places don't allow stags on weekend.... just not fair...hahah Dear Nick. I did walk around yesterday. Got lost in the way. Would try again today. ![]() That is certainly possible in the lanes between Mylapore and Mandaveli --- it's happened to me too! It's even worse when driving, as some of them are very, very narrow --- but it makes for good exploring. |

Vjay... I have also around a month ago shifted to chennai and now about to shift to my own 2 bed room flat after staying for around 5 weeks in company guest house.
I recently moved to Besant nagar. I agree with yr concern on safety but so far I have had no problem even when I go around the city around 2 or 3 am. Of course one should not stretch his luck too far and go to walk slum in light night or simply open the door for anybody.. Just to comapre my own deal.. u want to tel me how much this 2 bedroom house costing u on rent .. Is it furnished or u r buying things. Thanks Indianbuddy |

Hi Vijay,
I happened to pass via Santhome High Road today and noted the name of the restaurant I mentioned in my earlier post. Its called Palmshore, a strikingly orange colour board would welcome you. Guess it has been started by some gulf returned Indians. As Nick mentioned its worth exploring the small lanes of Mylapore. Not sure if you have heard, there are heritage walks conducted in and around Mylapore and its very interesting to learn that some things are still not forgotten and preserved in Chennai to retain the heritage but in a small way. Dear Indianbuddy,
The apartment was deal by my company, its about Rs. 20K per month without the maintenance charges. It is furnish with a/cond, fridge, heater, TV and a sofa set. So the only thing I need to get is the washing machine. Dear Raghu, I seen the shop, Palmshore, its just 5min walk from my place. But haven't visited it yet, maybe today will have the chance to check it out. There is Sangeetha nearby. I am taking most of my dinner there currently. |

Ok Vijay,
Further down the road after Palm shore, keep walking for abt 5 minutes towards Santhome Church, on the right hand side you would find MGM Grand Hotel. I heard They have a good bar. You may check it out if you wish. Cheers, Raghu Quote:

Morning,
I did try the Palmstore yesterday. I tried their roll and Indian bread yesterday. The food is good and reasonably priced. Thanks Raghu. |
