Question Moving to Chennai - Questions

I am moving to Chennai for work and I have a couple of questions. I know that DishTV is available in Chennai, but I'm not sure if there is a way to find out which shows are available. For example, what season of Lost is showing in India now?

Also, I have heard that it would be cheaper to buy a multisystem TV in the US before I head to India than to buy a TV in India. Is this true?

I am sure I'll have other questions as I get closer to moving, but for now, that's a start.

Thank you!

Bridget

Well All NBC shows are mainly telecast on Star world. And they are one season behind those actually running on NBC in US.

For example Lost season 4 hasn't been shown yet in india. leave alone start of 5.

Heroes --> season 3 volume one on Star world

Prison break --> last when i saw season 3 was being shown 4th yet to start. on star world

24-> season 6 got recently completed on AXN so don't expect season 7 so soon!

Criminal minds --> season 4 was recently shown on star world.

And yes there is vast cost difference between electronics (especially multimedia) in US and india. US being cheaper. So if you plan to get a LCD tv or Plasnma, get it from US.

Thank you for the information!

I wonder if I can watch the current episodes online, or if that will be blocked. I guess time will tell.

you cannot watch episodes online, as NBC streams online these shows only for people residing in US. but yes if you get a decent internet conection, you can use torrents to download. i have 1 MBPS. connection, a show is roughly 350 mb and takes about 40 minutes to download.

Does your internet charge by the amount downloaded? Or is there a limit on how much you can download?

Thanks again,
Bridget

HI all
My connection is Airtel broadband 1MBPS
i pay Rs 2222 + taxes comes around Rs 2450.

I have taken Unlimited download for 24 hours plan. there rae other plans also (cheaper options like opting unlimited download between off peak hours like 9PM to 9 AM)

There are also options like "speed on demand" . eg u can take 256kbps for normal browsing with fixed prices, and at certain times if you wanna download you can request speed increase with Cost depending on usage (download/upload aount) and speed requested during that time i.e usage period.

You can buy a slingbox and set it up in USA, and view the shows in chennai through internet.

I have just switched from BSNL 256Kb Fraudband (unlimited down/upload) at 750 to Intel 2Mb (only 15Gb included in cost) at 1199+tax

Intel and BSNL are the main players in the market, although there are others. You can see their websites and check out their tariffs. We can, as individuals, tell you what we use, but there is a wide range of options, so it really is better to check the source info yourself.

BSNL Tariff

Airtel Broadband (Select Tamil Nadu from the drop down list)

India has come late to the Broadband arena, does not seem to give any importance to internet for the masses, as many governments do, and has among the the most expensive 'broadband' in the world.

Yes it's true, I have setup slingbox setups in the USA for family members in India and it works well, if any have questions let me know!
Another way to watch off of hulu or other sites is to setup a proxy or VPN solution to US, then you will be "in" the US. I am researching about this as we speak, and have talked to folks using Netflix from India, etc. even though it is supposed to only be available in USA.
I, however, am looking for someone to setup a slingbox for me in India!

We live on our itunes and buy all of our "favorite" shows. There is very little good English programming here in Chennai (that is unless you LOVE Friends, I swear that show is on 24/7!) We have yet to try torrents but hear that it is very good.
It does seem that more and more programs are entering the Chennai market but there are no regular program hours - we are starting to look into a cable recorder (like a DVR from Comcast) - this will also help with watching all the sports, the time difference is huge!

If you have a Mac then the Apple TV allows you to purchase and download US TV shows - including the current season, as soon as the episode airs.
