pooja,

Are you absolutely sure your BF wants you to move to India with him? Many Indians can turn into completely different person under the influence of their family.

True. I turned into a misanthrope

Seriously, 'family' influence can be good too.

On the other hand, we have the mafia... though Omerta would be a good code to practice with families in general.

I'm female of SriLankan origin and get stared at even when in Indian outfit (okay I hate wearing the dupatta/shawl so don't) - my husband's empathetic response to my complaint was "tie your hair up, put some flowers in it, stick a 'pottu/bindi' on and take those sunglasses off".....

I think Chennai is a great place to be in and I am sure you will love it..just be careful while dealing with auto drivers, if at all you need to ..and yes, south may be a bit conservative but people are definitely polite ..
