I want to get a replacement screen for my Sony Ericsson W880 mobile phone with a new mylar flex. The old one was damaged in a washing machine incident getting on to a year ago. I hear there are very good prices on these sorts of parts in India and that I should be able to get them in Chennai.
Can anyone point me into a precinct or specific shop that will be able to supply. I can install myself as I have done this when I clean out after the washing machine water got in. I've heard of a street called Ritchie St.... Does this ring a bell with anyone? |

Ritchie Street is at the crossing of Mount Road and Walajah road, near Anna statue. It's has thousands of shops full of electronics goods of all varieties. You'll definitely get what you are looking for.

If you're trying to find it on a map, look for Narasingapuram St.
Come to think of it, if you're looking for Mount's Road on a map: Anna Salai.

Yep, they had it in Ritchie Street. Price seemed too high, compared with prices I'd seen in the WWW, so I didn't buy. I did check with a number of vendors, got a variation and found reasonable price. They all seemed to make phone calls, bar a couple, I suspect they were calling the guy that offered the lowest price and then slapping on a margin to walk up the stret. I will check for the same again item later in Bengaluru to see if it is consistent. Slightly older phone, so not worth spending a lot on. But the chase was fun in itself. I did buy an OEM headset for the phone at a fantastic price compared with back home.

Bengaluru would be costlier. The market there is in city market near Shivaji Park .
Why not go to their (Sony Erickson)shops spread all over the city?Or you could try a private shop which does repairs in City Centre Building Puraswalkam. How much did the headset cost? Are they the ones that look like a muffler? I have a W700I still going strong! |

![]() It may not be as bad as Burma Bazaar, but Ritchie Street does have a reputation for good bargains --- as long as you know somebody. For Burma Bazaar, I'm told just never buy there without knowing someone.... |

I managed to locate the Sony Ericsson parts I was seeking in Bangalore, after a couple of weeks wandering around Kerala.
For those who are interested, in Bangalore I got the parts from a store on one of Bangalore's electronic retail hubs, S.P. Road, 1st Cross. That street carries many mobile parts and computer parts, just like Ritchie St. However, I didn't buy from the primary stockist, so I didn't get the absolute best price. I bought from PIC-CEL, so try other places to see if you can do better. Even so, the price was about 5% less than the absolute best deal I located from the primary seller, Moon Star, for Sony Ericsson spares in Ritchie St, Chennai. It was cheaper in Bangalore even after including a commission (probably about 5%) for buying through a secondary retailer, ie. he called the primary seller by phone, something that happened a lot in Chennai, and then collected the parts. I couldn't being bothered spending 1-2 hours trying to locate the primary seller and probably paid about 5% more than I may if I actually located the store that stocked the part. Things worked out well in the end. |
